Summary: Characterization of bacteriophages can provide valuable information about their biology, host specificity, genomic diversity, and adaptation to bacterial hosts. In this study, a bacteriophage fEg-Eco19 was isolated and characterized, which showed effectiveness against the clinical pathogen Escherichia coli. The phage belongs to the order Caudovirales and has a narrow host range. Its genome is 45,805 bp long with 76 predicted genes, which are involved in various functional groups.

Summary: The study revealed a worrisome 15% colistin resistance rate in Escherichia coli strains isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia in a university hospital. These resistant strains carry various drug resistance and virulence-related genes, highlighting the importance of careful monitoring and infection control policies in the hospital setting.

Systematic exploration of Escherichia coli phage-host interactions with the BASEL phage collection

Enea Maffei et al.

Summary: This study aimed to promote a systematic exploration of phage-host interactions by establishing a phage sample library. The research characterized 68 phages phenotypically and genomically, identified essential host receptors, quantified their sensitivity to different bacterial defense systems, and revealed systematic differences in potency among immunity systems and molecular basis of receptor specificity in various phage groups. Results also indicated trade-offs between fitness traits that might drive divergent adaptation of different phage groups to specific ecological niches. The BASEL collection is envisioned to inspire future research in the biology of bacteriophages and hosts for effective translation into biotechnology or therapeutic applications.

Formulations for Bacteriophage Therapy and the Potential Uses of Immobilization

Daniel Rosner et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens has made the treatment of bacterial diseases more challenging, leading to a growing interest in phages as an alternative form of treatment. Whilst some success has been seen in clinical trials, there have also been high-profile trials that failed to demonstrate the efficacy of phage preparations, highlighting the importance of effective delivery of phage therapeutics in future success.
