Water Use Characteristics of Weeds: A Global Review, Best Practices, and Future Directions

Mandeep Singh et al.

Summary: This review synthesized globally available quantitative data on weed water use (WU) from 23 peer-reviewed publications. The study found that there is a lack of best experimental and reporting practices in weed WU research, which undermines the robustness and application of the data. The review proposed the best practices for quantifying and presenting weed WU and adapted a model to simulate the weed-crop-water system. Potential cross-disciplinary questions were also proposed for future research in the field.

Effect of environmental factors on the germination and emergence of drunken horse grass (Achnatherum inebrians)

Yonghuan Yue et al.

Summary: The germination of Drunken horse grass seeds is significantly influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, and burial depth. The optimal germination temperature is 25 degrees Celsius, and seedling emergence is highest at a burial depth of 1 centimeter.

Effect of soil moisture regimes on the growth and fecundity of slender amaranth (Amaranthus viridis) and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus)

Asad M. Khan et al.

Summary: Slender amaranth and redroot pigweed are becoming more problematic weeds of summer crops in Australia. Water stress negatively impacts the growth and reproduction of these species, with both showing reduced growth and seed production under increased water-stress levels. However, they are still able to produce a significant number of seeds even under severe water-limiting conditions. Management strategies are needed to control the growth and survival of these weeds in water-deficit conditions.

Seed germination responses to soil hydraulic conductivity and polyethylene glycol (PEG) osmotic solutions

Manuel E. Camacho et al.

Summary: Our study compared seed germination of four plant species in PEG and four soils with different textures under different water potentials, finding significant differences in total germination under different conditions. We found that soil water potential is more directly related to germination rate, and Kh provides a more robust description of germination rate across species and soils.

Seed longevity and germination in response to changing drought and heat conditions on four populations of the invasive weed African lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula)

Jason Roberts et al.

Summary: African lovegrass is an invasive weed that threatens biodiversity globally, with germination affected by drought stress, radiant heat stress, and burial depth and longevity. Different populations showed varied responses to these stressors, highlighting the importance of understanding the factors influencing germination in managing infestations.

Germination ecology of four African mustard (Brassica tournefortii Gouan) populations in the eastern region of Australia

Sohraab Singh et al.

Summary: The study found that germination of African mustard is influenced by temperature and light, with differences between populations. Seeds can germinate in a wide range of temperatures, and population A is more tolerant to water and salt stress. Seeds placed at 1-cm soil depth showed the highest emergence rate.

Seed germination ecology of southeastern Australian rigid ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) populations

Michael Thompson et al.

Summary: The study found that different populations of rigid ryegrass exhibit varying seed germination responses to different temperatures and salt stress levels, as well as differences in seed germination rates under dark conditions. Additionally, increasing burial depth leads to a decrease in seedling emergence rates.

Amaranthus retroflexus L. (Redroot Pigweed): Effects of Elevated CO2 and Soil Moisture on Growth and Biomass and the Effect of Radiant Heat on Seed Germination

Sandra Weller et al.

Summary: Moisture stress reduces growth and biomass yield of Amaranthus retroflexus, while elevated CO2 levels mitigate the negative impacts of drought on its productivity. Heating seeds at high temperatures significantly decreases germination rates.

Plant strategies for maximizing growth during water stress and subsequent recovery in Solanum melongena L. (eggplant)

Evelyn F. Delfin et al.

Summary: The study identified hydraulic traits associated with high productivity under water stress in different eggplant genotypes, with some showing water-spender strategy and others adopting a water-saver strategy. Despite negative impact on biomass traits, physiological traits showed recovery after a week, indicating eggplant's strong capacity for rebounding from short-term deficits. These traits should be considered in selection and breeding of eggplant hybrids for future agricultural outlooks.
