Joint identification of contaminant source characteristics and hydraulic conductivity in a tide-influenced coastal aquifer

Arezou Dodangeh et al.

Summary: Coastal aquifers, which are vital water sources for over one billion people, face the challenges of seawater intrusion and anthropogenic contamination. Identification and localization of contaminant source characteristics are needed to reduce contamination. However, most existing studies have focused on inland aquifers and have not addressed the complexities of coastal settings. This study presents an efficient methodology for identifying contaminant source characteristics and aquifer hydraulic conductivity in coastal aquifers. It uses numerical modeling and artificial neural network metamodels in the CRD-EnKF algorithm. The study successfully applies this approach to the complex setting of coastal aquifers and analyzes common issues in contaminant source identification monitoring.

A robust deep learning workflow to predict multiphase flow behavior during geological CO2 sequestration injection and Post-Injection periods

Bicheng Yan et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a deep learning workflow for accurately and efficiently predicting the temporal-spatial evolution of pressure and CO2 saturation in geologic CO2 sequestration (GCS) process. By using a Fourier Neural Operator and different combinations of features, the predictive accuracy can be improved. Experimental results show that using two separate deep learning models to distinguish between injection and post-injection periods generates the most accurate prediction of pressure, while a single deep learning model can predict CO2 saturation most accurately. The workflow not only provides highly accurate predictions, but also offers a 250 times speedup compared to physics-based simulation.

Summary: This study explores using recurrent neural networks to fill gaps in spatially distributed time-series hydrological data, finding that LSTM models excel in capturing both high-frequency and low-frequency dynamics. Compared to traditional ARIMA methods, LSTMs perform better in handling high-frequency variations but may have larger errors in time windows with abrupt changes or high-frequency fluctuations.

Application of upscaling methods for fluid flow and mass transport in multi-scale heterogeneous media: A critical review

Xiaoying Zhang et al.

Summary: The physical and biogeochemical heterogeneity in geological formations significantly impacts fluid flow and solute transport behaviors, making upscaling a valid approach for estimating large-scale parameters. Deterministic and stochastic are the two main categories of upscaling methodologies, with volume averaging being widely applicable and numerical solutions gaining popularity. The gap between approach algorithms and real-world applications calls for an integrated upscaling framework incorporating uncertainty quantification techniques, data sciences, and artificial intelligence for future geo-energy research.

Vertical Displacement Caused by Hydrological Influence in the Amazon Basin

Lavoisiane Ferreira et al.

Summary: Hydrologic loading studies investigate the influence of variables such as soil moisture, precipitation, and groundwater on water mass movements and their impact on the positioning of GNSS stations and the gravitational field. This study in the Amazon Basin explores the correlation between displacement and deformation variations with local geological and climatic factors, aiming to understand mechanisms influencing water distribution during the hydrological cycle. The research demonstrates that geology and topography play crucial roles in the vertical displacement associated with hydrologic loading, with differences in soil moisture patterns observed in areas dominated by sedimentary versus igneous/metamorphic rocks.
