Occurrence and point-of-use treatment of contaminants of emerging concern in groundwater of the Nzoia River basin, Kenya

Kenneth K'oreje et al.

Summary: Groundwater is a major source of fresh water worldwide, but it faces serious challenges from pollutants and emerging contaminants. This study provides unique data on the occurrence of various contaminants in groundwater wells in Kenya and highlights the dominance of pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Improved understanding of regional groundwater drought development through time series modelling: the 2018-2019 drought in the Netherlands

Esther Brakkee et al.

Summary: The 2018-2019 drought in north-western and central Europe caused severe damage and highlighted the need for adaptations to cope with increasing drought frequencies. This study developed a time series modelling-based method to map the spatio-temporal development of groundwater drought in the south-eastern Netherlands. The analysis showed extreme groundwater drought throughout the region, with varying onset and duration based on rainfall distribution and landscape type. The time series modelling-based data preparation method proved to be a useful tool for detailed regional groundwater drought monitoring.

Development of a qualitative approach to assessing risks associated with the use of treated wastewater in agricultural irrigation

D. Michael Revitt et al.

Summary: The study presents a framework combining data and expert judgement to assess the potential impacts of chemicals of emerging concern on water reuse in agriculture. Guidelines are developed to support the implementation of the framework in soil, where the overall risk assessment is characterized by multiplying allocated scores to obtain a discrete overall score per chemical of emerging concern.

Ten years of research on synergisms and antagonisms in chemical mixtures: A systematic review and quantitative reappraisal of mixture studies

Olwenn Martin et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and quantitative reassessment of experimental mixture studies over the past 10 years, finding that approximately one quarter of studies claimed synergistic or antagonistic effects, while another quarter arrived at different evaluations. Although the majority of studies did not exceed acceptable between-study variability, and observed mixture doses were usually within two-fold higher or lower than predicted additive doses, there were still relatively few cases of synergistic or antagonistic effects that stood up to scrutiny.

Removal and Release of the 2,4,5-Trichlorophenoxyacetic Acid Herbicide from Wastewater by Layered Double Hydroxides

El Hassane Mourid et al.

Summary: Zn-2-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) show high efficiency in removing 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) herbicide, with a removal rate of 96% and a capacity of 718 mg/g. The retention of 2,4,5-T is influenced by factors such as solution pH, LDH charge density, adsorbent/adsorbate ratio, and the nature of interlayer anion. The possibility of LDH recycling for further use in eliminating pollutants from water is suggested.

Trade-offs between water needs for food, utilities, and the environment-a nexus quantification at different scales

Lotte de Vos et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the competition for water resources between food production, freshwater ecosystems, and utilities in different scenarios. It highlights potential impacts such as severe water shortage for electricity, industries, and households for an additional 1.7 billion people globally. Trade-offs in the water-energy-food nexus are notable at local scales, emphasizing the need to consider different dimensions simultaneously for achieving multiple sustainability targets.

Shifting the imbalance: Intentional reuse of Dutch sewage effluent in sub-surface irrigation

Dominique M. Narain-Ford et al.

Summary: Agricultural irrigation currently uses 69% of freshwater worldwide, causing periodic shortages in countries with a temperate climate like the Netherlands. Reusing sewage treatment plant effluent for agricultural sub-surface irrigation has the potential to fulfill a significant portion of the water demand.

Occurrence and removal of chemicals of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants and their impact on receiving water systems

Oksana Golovko et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are major sources of Emerging Chemicals of Concern (CECs) in aquatic environments, impacting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated 164 CECs at 15 locations, with CEC concentrations varying widely between WWTPs. The K-d of CECs correlated with K-ow, allowing for prediction of their distribution in water and solids. WWTP effluent had higher CEC concentrations than upstream waters, potentially impacting downstream ecosystems.

In situ measurement of an emerging persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) substance - Melamine and related triazines in waters by diffusive gradient in thin-films

Si -Si Liu et al.

Summary: Melamine and related triazines have become a public concern due to their persistence, mobility, and toxicity. A new passive sampling method based on DGT technique was developed and validated in this study to assess environmental exposure and risks of these compounds. The MCX-DGT sampler showed reliable performance in measuring triazines in water samples, indicating its potential as an in situ tool for understanding the occurrence, sources, and fate of these emerging substances in aquatic environments.

Reuse of treated water in European agriculture: Potential to address water scarcity under climate change

Jordan Hristov et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the reuse of treated water is a potential alternative water source for addressing water scarcity in Europe, despite limited effectiveness due to high costs and climate change impacts. To maximize the potential of reused water in addressing water stress, different pricing rates should be applied to ensure higher volumes at lower costs.

Improving removal of antibiotics in constructed wetland treatment systems based on key design and operational parameters: A review

Yujie He et al.

Summary: The review highlights the importance of optimizing flow configuration, selecting plant species, and compensating for low microbial activity at low temperature for efficient removal of antibiotics in CWTS. Furthermore, a hybrid-CWTS that integrates horizontal and vertical subsurface flow could offer sufficient removal performance at reasonable cost. Future research should focus on elucidating key mechanisms for specific antibiotics removal to guide optimization of design and operational parameters.

Impact of the 2018 drought on pharmaceutical concentrations and general water quality of the Rhine and Meuse rivers

Emma Wolff et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of the 2018 drought on the water quality of the Rhine and Meuse rivers in Western Europe, focusing on parameters like water temperature, salinity, and select pharmaceuticals. The results showed a general deterioration in surface water quality due to low flow and high temperatures, with significant increases in water temperatures and salinity levels, and slight increases in some pharmaceutical concentrations. The main factors contributing to the decline in water quality were limited dilution from point sources and salinity intrusion in the lower part of the Rhine-Meuse delta.
