Mechanisms and product toxicity of activated carbon/peracetic acid for degradation of sulfamethoxazole: implications for groundwater remediation

Chaomeng Dai et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of carbon-based materials to activate peracetic acid (PAA) in the repair of groundwater, focusing on the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) using thermally modified activated carbon (AC600). The research examines the influence of groundwater pH, chloride ion (Cl-), bicarbonate (HCO3-), sulfate ion (SO42-) and natural organic matter (NOM) on the SMX removal process. The findings demonstrate that AC600 effectively activates PAA, and increasing doses of AC600 and PAA enhance the SMX removal, with bicarbonate inhibiting the process and chloride ion promoting it.

Peracetic acid promotes biohydrogen production from anaerobic dark fermentation of waste activated sludge

Chenxi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of peracetic acid (PAA) on hydrogen production in waste activated sludge (WAS) dark fermentation and explored the underlying mechanism. The results showed that increasing PAA dosage could significantly enhance hydrogen yield within a certain range, while excessive dosage led to a slight decrease in hydrogen production. PAA promoted sludge disintegration and inhibited the activity of all microorganisms involved in dark fermentation, with a more significant effect on hydrogen consumers than producers. Additionally, PAA effectively suppressed methane production.

Oxygen Vacancy-Induced Nonradical Degradation of Organics: Critical Trigger of Oxygen (O2) in the Fe-Co LDH/Peroxymonosulfate System

Liying Wu et al.

Summary: Ubiquitous oxygen vacancies in metallic compounds can activate peroxymonosulfate for water treatment, with O-2 identified as a critical trigger. Mechanistic studies show that Vo captures electrons to form O-2 and withdraws electrons from organics for degradation. The collaboration of kinetics and thermodynamics allows PMS to donate electrons to Vo, forming intermediate species that accelerate the electron-recycling process and improve organic degradation.

Identifying the Persistent Free Radicals (PFRs) Formed as Crucial Metastable Intermediates during Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) Activation by N-Doped Carbonaceous Materials

Yufei Zhen et al.

Summary: This study reveals the nonradical mechanism involved in peroxymonosulfate activation in carbonaceous materials and the formation of crucial intermediates, providing insights into the efficiency and activation energy of NHCS/PMS system for organic degradation. Persistent free radicals play a significant role in organic degradation, and their formation relies on the attack of surface-bonded radicals in PMS. The evolution of persistent free radicals from oxygen-centered to carbon-centered radicals is triggered by the degradation intermediates of aromatic compounds.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2): A novel activator of peracetic acid for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel advanced oxidation process using MoS2/PAA was applied to degrade sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the target SA. Results showed that under optimum pH conditions, the degradation efficiency of SMX exceeded 80% after 15 minutes of reaction. Increasing the dosages of PAA or MoS2 facilitated SMX degradation, while the presence of humic acids slowed down the removal of SMX.
