Gengyu Gao et al.

Summary: Industrial parks have made significant contributions to China's economic development, but they have also caused serious pollution. This study evaluates the eco-efficiencies of 18 industrial parks in Central China and identifies factors that affect ecological development. The study concludes with policy recommendations for improving the eco-efficiency of industrial parks.

Neonicotinoids: mechanisms of systemic toxicity based on oxidative stress-mitochondrial damage

Xiaoqing Xu et al.

Summary: This article reviews the effects of neonicotinoids on mitochondria and evaluates the protective effects of various active substances against neonicotinoid-induced toxicity. The research found that neonicotinoids can disrupt mitochondrial calcium ions homeostasis, inhibit mitochondrial respiration, and induce reactive oxygen species production, which leads to damage in non-target organisms. However, several active substances can protect against neonicotinoid-induced systemic toxicity by inhibiting oxidative signaling pathways, apoptosis, and lipid peroxidation. The article emphasizes the importance and urgency of developing neonicotinoid antidotes, with a focus on targeted mitochondrial antidotes.

Combining Experimental Sorption Parameters with QSAR to Predict Neonicotinoid and Transformation Product Sorption to Carbon Nanotubes and Granular Activated Carbon

Danielle T. Webb et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sorption propensity of neonicotinoid insecticides and their transformation products and proposes a combined computational and experimental method to predict their environmental fate. The findings demonstrate that quantitative structure-activity relationship models can accurately predict the sorption of neonicotinoids and their transformation products to carbon-based materials.

Concentrations and distributions of neonicotinoids in drinking water treatment plants in South Korea

Jiwon Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that the granular activated carbon filtration process in drinking water treatment plants had higher removal rates for neonicotinoids, but lower removal rates for dinotefuran and thiamethoxam. There were significant correlations between neonicotinoid removal rates and physicochemical properties. The estimated average human exposure to neonicotinoids in drinking water was 0.528 ng/(kg body weight d).

Oxidative stress, growth inhibition, and DNA damage in earthworms induced by the combined pollution of typical neonicotinoid insecticides and heavy metals

Xiaojing Yan et al.

Summary: The combined pollution of neonicotinoids and heavy metals in soil has significant adverse effects on earthworms, impacting their growth, genes, epidermis, midgut, and DNA. Different interactions between pollutants were observed, with some showing synergistic effects while others had antagonistic effects on various biological parameters of the earthworms. Heavy metals like zinc had the most significant impact on reactive oxygen species and DNA damage, while neonicotinoids like imidacloprid significantly enhanced malondialdehyde levels. Overall, composite pollutants can pose potential harm to soil organisms.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination status of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) and their metabolites in drinking water across China, finding variations in concentrations and patterns of NNIs in different regions, mainly influenced by differences in crop types and pesticide usage. Some drinking water samples exceeded the acceptable value recommended by the European Union, posing potential human health risks.

Uptake, Translocation, and Biotransformation of Neonicotinoid Imidaclothiz in Hydroponic Vegetables: Implications for Potential Intake Risks

Yan Tao et al.

Summary: The study found that imidaclothiz was readily taken up by plant roots and translocated upward to leaves in three plant-water systems. As exposure time increased, the recoveries of imidaclothiz decreased, resulting in a mass loss of approximately 31.8-45.6% at the end of exposure. Multiple metabolic reactions occurred within plants, yielding different products in the leaves.

Comparison of the toxicity of pure compounds and commercial formulations of imidacloprid and acetamiprid on HT-29 cells: Single and mixture exposure

Merve Baysal et al.

Summary: Neonicotinoids, synthetic derivatives of nicotine widely used as insecticides, have been found to have toxic effects on non-target organisms such as bees. Recent studies show detectable levels of neonicotinoids in the environment, causing various adverse effects including DNA damage, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial membrane depolarization. Mixtures of neonicotinoids induce toxic effects at lower concentrations than individual exposures, with formulation groups playing a key role in toxicity formation.
