Transformation products of pharmaceuticals in the environment: Their fate, (eco)toxicity and bioaccumulation potential

Jakub Maculewicz et al.

Summary: The presence of pharmaceutical residues in the environment has been a concern, but the transformation products have been overlooked for a long time. Recently, these transformation products have gained more scientific attention and their common presence in the environment has been proven. Some transformation products may be as harmful as their parent forms, but data for many drug groups are still insufficient.

Aquatic photolysis of ketoprofen generates products with photosensitizing activity and toxicity

Lixiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the photophysical, photochemical, and photosensitization processes of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Ketoprofen (KTF). The results show that the photoproducts of KTF have higher ecological toxicity and bioaccumulation than the parent compound, highlighting the importance of studying their formation and fate in sunlit surface waters.

Aquatic photolysis of 2,4-dichloro-6-nitrophenol-the toxic nitrated byproduct of 2,4-dichlorophenol

Yunong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photolysis of 2,4-Dichloro-6-nitrophenol (DCNP) in aqueous solutions and found that the anionic form of DCNP is more photoreactive. Several photoproducts were identified, and the primary photochemical mechanisms were discussed. These findings provide insights into the transformation and fate of DCNP in UV-based engineering systems or natural sunlit surface waters.

UV inactivation of sewage isolated human adenovirus

Roberto A. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Adenoviruses isolated from sewage samples showed high resistance to UV irradiation compared to laboratory grown strains, although the required doses for medium pressure UV lamps were still lower than low pressure UV lamps. These findings suggest that the fluence required for inactivation of adenoviruses in real-world waters may be higher than previously understood.

A review on conventional and advanced hybrid technologies for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment

Jamiu O. Eniola et al.

Summary: The review highlights the need for innovative approaches to tackle pharmaceutical pollutants in drinking water and wastewater. Conventional treatment methods are limited in their efficiency for removing pharmaceutical pollutants, necessitating the development of new and advanced treatment technologies. Hybrid technology and membrane bioreactors show promise in enhancing the removal efficacy of pharmaceutical pollutants. Future research should focus on the integration of multiple technologies to achieve better removal of pharmaceuticals.

Control for chlorine resistant spore forming bacteria by the coupling of pre-oxidation and coagulation sedimentation, and UV-AOPs enhanced inactivation in drinking water treatment

Guangqiang Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated a control strategy for spore-forming bacteria (SFB) in drinking water treatment. The results showed that pre-oxidation, coagulation sedimentation, and UV-AOPs inactivation were effective in transforming, removing, and inactivating SFB spores. The study also demonstrated the enhanced inactivation of the most chlorine-resistant SFB strain by adding chemicals to the UV irradiation process. The findings provide valuable references for dealing with SFB outbreak risk in drinking water treatment.

Kinetic and mechanistic investigation into odorant haloanisoles degradation process by peracetic acid combined with UV irradiation

Kejia Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation kinetics and mechanism of odorant haloanisoles using peracetic acid combined with UV irradiation (PAA/UV). The results showed that the removal efficiency of haloanisoles by PAA/UV was over 92% after 1 hour reaction, with different haloanisoles following specific degradation rates. The study also indicated that PAA mainly contributed to the degradation of chloroanisoles, while direct photolysis played a larger role in the removal of bromoanisole. The research suggested that PAA/UV process could effectively reduce olfactory discomfort and health risks associated with haloanisoles.

Aqueous photodecomposition of the emerging brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS)

Haiyan Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that TBBPS exhibited high photoreactivity in aqueous solution under 254 nm UV irradiation, likely proceeding through photonucleophilic substitution, photoreductive debromination, and beta-scission reactions for its photolysis. The formation of hydroxyl radicals accelerated the debromination reaction. However, the presence of NOM and other natural organic matter inhibited the photodegradation of TBBPS.

High efficiency photocatalytic degradation of Ambroxol over Mn doped TiO2: Experimental designs, identification of transformation products, mineralization and mechanism

Asma Tab et al.

Summary: The study investigated the ability of 1% Mn-doped TiO2 (MnTiO2) to mineralize the drug Ambroxol (AMB) through photocatalysis, demonstrating that Mn-TiO2 was 1.6 times more efficient than TiO2 Degussa P25 under optimized conditions. Product studies identified 21 photodegradation products and revealed the release of Br-, NH4+, and NO3-. The reusability test showed that Mn-TiO2 was highly stable after four cycles.

Tandem field and laboratory approaches to quantify attenuation mechanisms of pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical transformation products in a wastewater effluent-dominated stream

Hui Zhi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the attenuation dynamics and mechanisms of pharmaceuticals and their transformation products in effluent-dominated streams through a combination of field study and controlled laboratory experiments. Sorption was found to be the dominant attenuation process, with field measurements showing significantly higher attenuation rates compared to batch tests. The evolving pharmaceutical mixture in streams can impact aquatic and terrestrial biota, emphasizing the need for combining field and laboratory characterizations to improve modeling efforts for transport and risk assessments.

Prediction of Photolysis Kinetics of Viral Genomes under UV254 Irradiation to Estimate Virus Infectivity Loss

Shuangshuang Cheng et al.

Summary: UV254 irradiation disinfection is a commonly used method to inactivate pathogenic viruses in water and wastewater treatment. A model prediction method was developed to estimate the effectiveness of UV254 irradiation on emerging or unculturable viruses, showing good performance in predicting virus susceptibility to UV254 irradiation. This method can be used as a prescreening tool to assess the effectiveness of UV254 irradiation for emerging/unculturable viruses in water or waste water treatment.
