Evaluating nitrate transport and accumulation in the deep vadose zone of the intensive agricultural region, North China Plain

Meiying Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential impacts of intensive agriculture on groundwater quality by investigating nitrate accumulation and transport in the deep vadose zone. The results showed spatial variations in nitrate accumulation and transport, primarily controlled by sediment textures in the deep vadose zone. The findings provide an important foundation for groundwater quality management in agricultural areas.

Shallow groundwater fluctuation: An ignored soil N loss pathway from cropland

Anqiang Chen et al.

Summary: Nitrogen pollution from agricultural land is a major threat to shallow groundwater. While extensive research has been done on nitrogen losses through leaching and runoff, the soil nitrogen losses caused by fluctuating groundwater levels are often overlooked. This study found that soil nitrogen losses were mainly concentrated in the initial 12 days after flooding, followed by nitrogen immobilization, and eventually reached a balance between inflow and outflow after 50 days. Alterations between drying and flooding significantly increased nitrogen losses. Adjusting the planting structure is a key measure to reduce soil nitrogen storage and mitigate groundwater contamination.

Impact of transferred water on the hydrochemistry and water quality of surface water and groundwater in Baiyangdian Lake, North China

Yong Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed complex hydrological connections between surface water and groundwater in the North China Plain, with groundwater being influenced by shallow groundwater and surface water. In regions impacted by high nitrate-ion concentrations, there were inter-aquifer recharge processes from shallow to deep groundwater.

Sub-regional groundwater storage recovery in North China Plain after the South-to-North water diversion project

Chong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of the South-to-North water diversion Middle Route Project (MRP) on groundwater storage in North China Plain (NCP) by comparing changes before and after MRP operation. It found a significant recovery trend in groundwater storage after the operation of MRP, particularly in regions where groundwater over-utilization had occurred.
