Dead but Not Forgotten: How Extracellular DNA, Moisture, and Space Modulate the Horizontal Transfer of Extracellular Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Soil

Heather A. Kittredge et al.

Summary: This study shows that dead bacteria and their extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) can facilitate the spread of antibiotic resistance in soil. The transformation of eARGs to live bacteria occurred even at low concentrations and under typical soil moisture conditions. However, very high soil moistures inhibited the transformation process. This research highlights the importance of considering the role of dead bacteria and eARGs in the evolution of antibiotic resistance in the environment.

Fate and seasonality of antimicrobial resistance genes during full-scale anaerobic digestion of cattle manure across seven livestock production facilities

Tucker R. Burch et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during anaerobic digestion of livestock manure. The results showed that concentrations of intI1, sul1, and tet(A) decreased during anaerobic digestion, but their removal was less extensive than expected. Furthermore, tet(W) concentrations remained unchanged and erm(B) concentrations increased. These findings suggest that mesophilic anaerobic digestion may have limitations as an intervention for ARGs in livestock manure.

Performance of full-scale aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion on the changes of antibiotic resistance genes in dairy manure

Qiuping Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding the different performances of full-scale active composting (AC) and anaerobic digestion (AD) on the changes of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in dairy manure is crucial to uncover the dissemination risks of ARGs in post-biotreated manure. Metagenomic sequencing revealed that the total abundance of ARGs increased in dairy manure due to the contributions of AC rather than AD. The dominant ARG subtypes in AC were shifted completely, possibly due to the enrichment of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria which could be the hosts of multiple ARGs, inspiring further evaluation of the dissemination risks of ARGs from composted manure to soil and plants.

Influence of operating conditions on the persistence of E. coli, enterococci, Clostridium perfringens and Clostridioides difficile in semi-continuous mesophilic anaerobic reactors

Derongs Lorine et al.

Summary: This study found that anaerobic digestion effectively removed E. coli, enterococci, C. perfringens, and C. difficile, but the chemical parameters did not reach concentrations capable of inactivating these bacteria. Increasing hydraulic retention time only reduced the concentration of E. coli in the digestate, while increasing organic loading rate reduced the removal of enterococci and C. difficile.

On-Farm Anaerobic Digestion of Dairy Manure Reduces the Abundance of Antibiotic Resistance-Associated Gene Targets and the Potential for Plasmid Transfer

Tam T. Tran et al.

Summary: The study found that on-farm anaerobic digestion can reduce the abundance of enteric bacteria, antibiotic resistance-associated gene targets, and the horizontal transfer potential of ESBL genes. Most gene targets were more abundant in raw manure, but some resistance gene targets were more abundant in digested samples.

Aerobic Composting and Anaerobic Digestion Decrease the Copy Numbers of Antibiotic-Resistant Genes and the Levels of Lactose-Degrading Enterobacteriaceae in Dairy Farms in Hokkaido, Japan

Satoshi Katada et al.

Summary: Both aerobic composting (AC) and anaerobic digestion (AD) can significantly reduce the concentrations of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), but AD is more effective than AC. Although the majority of residual antimicrobials decrease after treatment, oxytetracycline levels remain unchanged in most cases.

Biogas production, waste stabilization efficiency, and hygienization potential of a mesophilic anaerobic plug flow reactor processing swine manure and corn stover

Daniel E. Arias et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anaerobic co-digestion of swine manure and corn stover, showing that increasing organic loading rate within a certain range can lead to stable process with high biogas production and reduced negative environmental impacts. The highest total biogas yield was achieved at an organic loading rate of 0.25 kg m(-3) d(-1). As organic loading rate and total solids content increased, changes in microbial activity were observed due to variations in volatile solid reduction and volatile fatty acids production.
