Influence of thermal hydrolysis on sludge anaerobic digestion: Release of humic acid promotes electron transport of methanogen

Cheng Zhao et al.

Summary: Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) is widely used for anaerobic digestion (AD), but the influence of humic acids (HAs) released during THP on methanogenesis is not well understood. This study found that HAs extracted from thermally hydrolyzed sludge can improve methanogenesis, but the efficiency varies depending on the temperature at which the HAs were harvested. Although individual characteristics of HAs, such as molecular weight and electroactive group compositions, do not significantly affect methanogenesis, the combined effects of these characteristic have a noticeable impact. It was also discovered that quinones (Q1) with electron withdrawing groups play a key role in promoting methanogenesis. However, temperatures above 160°C can alter the structure of HAs and negatively affect methane production.

Weathering pathways and protocols for environmentally relevant microplastics and nanoplastics: What are we missing?

Olubukola S. Alimi et al.

Summary: Most studies on microplastics have been conducted using pristine particles, neglecting the effects of weathering. Current weathering protocols are not sufficient for microplastics research. There is a need to use environmentally relevant microplastics and critically assess the appropriateness of weathering methods in future research efforts.

Effect of calcium peroxide pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of primary and secondary sludge of A2/O process

Zhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluates the impact of calcium peroxide (CP) on anaerobic digestion (AD) of primary and secondary sludge. The results show that CP pretreatment can effectively eliminate fecal coliform and promote the solubilization of secondary sludge. Furthermore, CP pretreatment increases methane production potential, reduces harmful substances, and facilitates the subsequent treatment of biogas slurry. This research is of great significance for pretreatment technology of waste sludge and the application of CP in wastewater treatment plants.

Thermal Hydrolysis of Sludge Counteracts Polystyrene Nanoplastics-Induced Stress during Anaerobic Digestion

Seyed Mohammad Mirsoleimani Azizi et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the impact of thermal hydrolysis process (THP) on the stress induced by nanoplastics (NPs) in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process of sewage sludge. The results showed that THP can mitigate the suppression of methane production caused by NPs and reduce oxidative stress levels, while also reducing the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs).

Cascade systems to recover resources from sludge by the integration of pretreatments to fermentation-based anaerobic bioleaching process

Barbara Tonanzi et al.

Summary: Future sustainable technological solutions should balance the development of sludge as a resource with the need to protect human health and the environment. This study explored the feasibility of pretreating sludge with ultrasound and using anaerobic microorganisms to recover valuable resources. The results showed that acid addition and thermal treatment were effective strategies to promote solubilization and acidification of the system, while high abundance of hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria contributed to the successful conversion of volatile fatty acids into methane. The study also presented a mass and energy balance for a full-scale scenario of this innovative biorefinery platform.

Degradation of common polymers in sewage sludge purification process developed for microplastic analysis

Maria Clara Lessa Belone et al.

Summary: A three-step method for sewage sludge purification using sodium dodecyl sulfate and hydrogen peroxide was proposed in this study. The effects of the purification method on different polymers were evaluated, showing varying levels of degradation among the tested plastics. PA66 and SBR were notably affected in terms of integrity, while other polymers showed less substantial degradation.

Understanding the fragmentation of microplastics into nano-plastics and removal of nano/microplastics from wastewater using membrane, air flotation and nano-ferrofluid processes

Biplob Kumar Pramanik et al.

Summary: The study found that mechanical impellers could fragment MPs into NPs of various sizes. The air flotation process showed efficient removal of certain plastics, and increasing the surfactant dose improved removal efficiency. The removal efficiency of NPs/MPs by the ferrofluid system depended on solution characteristics, and membrane processes were highly effective in removing NPs/MPs fragment particles.

Sewage sludge as a source of microplastics in the environment: A review of occurrence and fate during sludge treatment

M. Dilara Hatinog lu et al.

Summary: Modern wastewater treatment plants effectively remove microplastics from wastewater but concentrate them in sludge, causing secondary release pathways of estimated MPs to environmental compartments yearly. Limited studies exist on microplastics in sludge treatment, focusing more on identifying the problem than understanding fate and effects of microplastics. Future research should aim to fully understand mechanisms behind microplastics effects in sludge treatment and explore potential improvements.

The entering of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics into biological wastewater treatment system affects aerobic sludge digestion differently from their direct entering into sludge treatment system

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inhibition effect of PET microplastics on waste activated sludge (WAS) aerobic digestion, showing a decrease in hydrolysis but an improvement in solubilization when PET microplastics enter the biological wastewater treatment system. However, direct addition of PET microplastics to the sludge aerobic digester resulted in serious inhibition of hydrolysis, significantly suppressing WAS aerobic digestion. Further investigation revealed that PET microplastics reduced the populations of key bacteria involved in aerobic digestion via induced oxidative stress or releasing toxic chemicals.
