Virome of Bat-Infesting Arthropods: Highly Divergent Viruses in Different Vectors

Ziqian Xu et al.

Summary: Bats are reservoirs of important zoonotic viruses, but it is unclear whether blood-sucking arthropods on their body surface also carry these viruses. In this study, arthropods collected from bats in China were analyzed, revealing a diverse range of viruses. Most of these viruses were arthropod-specific, but three potentially arboviruses were identified, highlighting the possibility of virus spillage.

Zoonotic disease and virome diversity in bats

Kate Van Brussel et al.

Summary: The emergence of zoonotic viral diseases in humans is often due to exposure to bats, which are considered to be the most important reservoir for such viruses. Despite the abundance of virus diversity in bats, the majority of bat viruses have not caused disease in new hosts, highlighting the importance of preserving bats as critical components of global ecosystems.

Emerging viruses: Cross-species transmission of coronaviruses, filoviruses, henipaviruses, and rotaviruses from bats

Jin Tian et al.

Summary: This article mainly introduces the taxonomy, geographic distribution, and unique traits of bats as virus reservoirs, as well as the origin, intermediate hosts, and interspecies transmission mechanisms of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and other viruses associated with bats. The molecular interactions between viral surface proteins and host cell receptors are also studied, comparing these interactions in humans, intermediate hosts, and bats.

Cenote-Taker 2 democratizes virus discovery and sequence annotation

Michael J. Tisza et al.

Summary: Viruses are abundant and mysterious, with the majority of species yet to be discovered, and many genes in central databases labeled as 'hypothetical protein'. Cenote-Taker 2 is a tool for virus discovery and annotation, offering automatic annotation of sequence features and providing rich gene information.

Lagos Bat Virus, an Under-Reported Rabies-Related Lyssavirus

Jessica Coertse et al.

Summary: Lagos bat virus is a viral species endemic to the African continent, with four lineages and genetic diversity that exceeds existing lyssavirus species demarcation criteria. Despite several exposures to rabid bats infected with LBV, no human cases have been reported to date. This review provides a history of LBV, summarizes previous knowledge, and re-evaluates genetic diversity, pathogenesis, and prevention.

Bat Flies of the Family Streblidae (Diptera: Hippoboscoidea) Host Relatives of Medically and Agriculturally Important Bat-Associated Viruses

Maria M. Ramirez-Martinez et al.

Summary: The study found multiple viruses in streblid bat flies collected from bats in Mexico and Uganda, revealing previously unrecognized virus transmission cycles involving bats and bat flies. The viruses identified in the study are related to emerging zoonotic viruses and suggest potential zoonotic transmission pathways involving bats and their ectoparasites.
