Effect of annealing temperature on optical, dielectric and NH3 gas sensing properties of ZnxFe3-xO4 (x=0 and 0.5) nanoparticles synthesized by sol- gel auto-combustion method

Ashwini S. Varpe et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of annealing temperature and Zn doping on the properties of iron oxide nanoparticles. It was found that with increasing annealing temperature and Zn doping, the lattice constant of iron oxide nanoparticles increases, the particle size decreases, the band gap reduces, and the sensitivity towards NH3 gas improves. This enhancement in sensitivity is attributed to the smaller particle size and increased specific surface area of Zn doped iron oxide nanoparticles compared to the host nanoparticles.

Gas sensor towards n-butanol at low temperature detection: Hierarchical flower-like Ni-doped Co3O4 based on solvent-dependent synthesis

Pengfei Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, hierarchical flower-like Ni-doped Co3O4 was successfully synthesized using a facile method, and the effect of ethanol/water ratio on samples was investigated. Gas sensors based on the prepared materials showed excellent performance, with the sensor using 5.3 mol% Ni-doped Co3O4 microflowers exhibiting the highest response towards n-butanol, as well as outstanding anti-humidity properties and long-term stability. The improved gas sensing properties were attributed to the unique hierarchical flower-like microstructure and optimized parameters resulting from the Ni doping.

Summary: This study prepared a series of n-ZnO/p-xCo(3)O(4) NPs and found that the Zn:Co molar ratio influenced the gas-sensing selectivity. The results indicated that n-ZnO/p-0.61Co(3)O(4) NPs, formed with a p-n heterojunction, hold promise in addressing the issue of poor selectivity in MOS-based gas sensors.

The influence of different ZnO nanostructures on NO2 sensing performance

Hongtao Wang et al.

Summary: Three different ZnO nanostructures (nanorods/flowers/spheres) were prepared using hydrothermal method or water bath, and their sensing properties to NO2 activated by UV light were investigated. The nanospheres showed the highest response due to their largest specific surface area, while the nanorods exhibited the fastest response and recovery speeds. The nanoflowers performed in between the nanorods and nanospheres in terms of gas-sensing response and response speed.

The same chemical state of carbon gives rise to two peaks in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

G. Greczynski et al.

Summary: Chemical state analysis in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) relies on assigning well-defined binding energy values to core level electrons originating from atoms in particular bonding configurations. Here, direct evidence is presented for the violation of this paradigm, as the C 1s peak due to C-C/C-H bonded atoms from adventitious carbon (AdC) layers splits into two distinctly different contributions. This finding exposes fundamental problems with the reliability of reported XPS data and suggests discontinuing the use of adventitious carbon in XPS.
