Electronic structure and optical properties of non-metallic modified graphene: a first-principles study

Jing-tao Huang et al.

Summary: In this paper, the electronic structure and stability of different doped graphene are studied using first-principles calculations. The results show that B and Si doping leads to p-type behavior, while N doping leads to n-type behavior. Additionally, the optical properties study reveals that S-doped graphene exhibits the highest sensitivity to light in the visible region.

Discovery of aluminum alloys with ultra-strength and high-toughness via a property-oriented design strategy

Lei Jiang et al.

Summary: Aluminum alloys with ultra-strength and high-toughness are essential materials in the aerospace industry, but balancing these properties is challenging. This study used a machine learning design system to discover novel aluminum alloys with comparable properties to current state-of-the-art AA7136 alloy. The new alloys have high Mg and Zn content for hardening and refined grain size due to dispersoids.

Investigation on tensile properties and failure mechanism of Al(111)/Al3Ti (112) interface using the first-principles method

Xin Pei et al.

Summary: The first-principles tensile simulation was conducted to investigate the tensile properties and failure mechanism of the Al(111)/Al3Ti(112) interface, revealing a maximum tensile strength of 14.38 GPa and absorption of deformation energy by the interface and Al side. Exceeding 25% tensile strain results in the breaking of chemical bonds at the interface, leading to the destruction of the tensile model. Increasing strain causes a continuous and rapid decrease in the lattice constant and appearance of electron holes, weakening atom interactions and making the interface susceptible to failure.

Revealing the Al/L12-Al3Zr inter-facial properties: Insights from first-principles calculations

Duanzhi Wang et al.

Summary: The mechanical performance and micro-structure of the Al/L1(2)-Al3Zr interface were investigated through density functional theory, revealing that the stacking sequence and atom type between the two phases significantly influence the interface's mechanical performance. Among the four interface models studied, one particular model stood out as having the best performer in the tensile test.

First principles study of stability, electronic structure and fracture toughness of Ti3SiC2/TiC interface

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The interfacial properties of TiC-Ti3SiC2 composites were theoretically clarified through first principles calculations, revealing that the Ti2(Si)-H-C interface has the highest bonding strength and thermodynamic stability. Strong Ti-C mixed covalent-ionic bonds were formed at the interface, particularly near the Tit-Si bond on the Ti3SiC2 side.

Argon diffusion in graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide foils

L. Torrisi et al.

Summary: Measurements of argon diffusion coefficient in graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been conducted. The results show that the diffusion coefficient of argon is higher than that of nitrogen in both materials. The diffusion coefficient of argon increases with temperature and decreases from GO to rGO, while the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen increases with temperature and from GO to rGO.

Novel Si-added CrCoNi medium entropy alloys achieving the breakthrough of strength-ductility trade-off

H. Chang et al.

Summary: A novel CrCoNiSix MEAs system was designed to enhance strength and ductility by increasing Si content, with the underlying strengthening mechanism involving the reduction of SFE and increase in lattice distortion via Si addition. More concentrated deformation twins were observed in Si-added MEAs, and a nanoscale diffusionless transformation occurred from FCC to HCP phase at room temperature.

Microstructural control and mechanical properties of a high Li-containing Al-Mg-Li alloy

Ting Yuan et al.

Summary: By accurately controlling the microstructure through ECAP and post-heat treatment, high strength and improved ductility were achieved in an Al-Mg-Li alloy with a high Li content. Refining coarse S-1 phases, uniformly precipitating fine metastable delta' phase particles, and maintaining ultrafine grains resulted in a combination of high strength (>450 MPa) and good ductility (>13.5%). The heat treatment method was also found to be applicable to other Al-Li alloys for adjusting microstructure and achieving an optimal combination of strength and ductility, expanding applications in the aerospace field.

Thermal stability of aluminum-cerium binary alloys containing the Al-Al11Ce3 eutectic

Frank Czerwinski

Summary: The strength retention of Al-Ce binary alloys at high temperatures was assessed compared to A380 alloy and pure Al. The Al11Ce3 eutectic and proeutectic phases were found to have limited effectiveness in strengthening Al-Ce alloys at room temperature and retaining their strength at increased temperatures. Despite the high hardness retention ratio of Al-Ce alloys, the yield stress decreased with testing temperatures.

L. Torrisi et al.

Summary: Measurements were conducted to determine nitrogen diffusion coefficients in graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) at different temperatures, showing significantly higher diffusion coefficients in rGO due to removal of water and functional oxygen groups leading to the opening of nanochannels. Thermal activation energy of nitrogen diffusion was evaluated for both materials.
