Hard-templated engineering of versatile 2D amorphous metal oxide nanosheets

Ling Chang et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional nanomaterials have attracted increasing attention due to their superior mass transfer ability and abundant catalytic-active sites. This study presents a general and facile synthetic strategy for fabricating a range of amorphous 2D metal and nonmetallic oxide nanosheets. These nanomaterials are prepared through in situ hydrolysis and condensation of precursors, with their synthesis controlled by surface energy and other parameters. Density functional theory calculations are used to understand the molecular adsorption mechanism of the precursor on a solid NaCl substrate. The prepared 2D nanomaterials exhibit excellent catalytic performance and can be easily functionalized.

Steering rigidified nonplanar conjugation based perylene diimide supramolecular for enhancing photocatalytic activity

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports on the varied intramolecular angles of PDI polymers and investigates the role of pi-conjugated non-planar molecules in photocatalysis. Results demonstrate that the vertical structure of non-planar molecules enhances the electric field and facilitates charge transfer and exciton dissociation, as well as promotes carrier migration and separation. This research provides a new interpretation for developing highly efficient photocatalysts to address sustainability issues.

Atomically Resolved Quantum-Confined Electronic Structures at Organic-Inorganic Interfaces of Two-Dimensional Ruddlesden- Popper Halide Perovskites

Min-Chuan Shih et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the direct visualization of atomically resolved quantum-confined electronic structures at organic-inorganic interfaces of 2D RPPs using STM and STS techniques. The presence of quantum-well-like type-I heterojunction band alignment and edge states due to organic cation vacancies are observed at these interfaces. Real-space visualization of atomic-scale structural phase transition behavior and changes in local electronic band structures are obtained simultaneously.

Reduced Fracture Strength of 2D Materials Induced by Interlayer Friction

Hao Zhan et al.

Summary: The study uses finite element simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to show that interlayer friction weakens the fracture strength of 2D layered materials (2DLMs), and that tip-membrane friction can lead to underestimation of the Young's modulus.

Lattice distortion-enhanced superlubricity of (Mo, X)S2 (X = Al, Ti, Cr and V) with moire superlattice

Peixuan Li et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively investigates the contributions of lattice distortions to superlubricity in solute-doped twisted bilayers, revealing that the changes in interlayer interactions induced by layer corrugations are key to optimizing lubricity and matching experimental friction coefficients. The evolutions of band structures show an exponential relationship between band edge width and layer deformations, providing a pathway for accelerated development of advanced superlubricity materials via lattice distortions.

Ultra-low friction and patterning on atomically thin MoS2via electronic tight-binding

Bin Shi et al.

Summary: Rubbing atomically thin MoS2 on a SiO2/Si substrate with an AFM tip under an electric field reduces friction significantly, leading to an ultra-low friction state. The charges transferring during rubbing process experimentally show electronic tight-binding with high interfacial bonding strength between MoS2 and the SiO2/Si substrate.
