A Trade-Off between Robustness to Environmental Fluctuations and Speed of Evolution

Max Schmid et al.

Summary: Understanding how a species' life history affects its ability to cope with environmental changes is crucial in the context of rapid climate changes. This study reveals a trade-off between a species' genetic adaptation to long-term environmental changes and its demographic resistance to short-term fluctuations, which impacts variation in its vital rates. Species with longer lifespans have greater demographic stability in interannual fluctuations but limited evolutionary responses to gradual environmental changes, while short-lived species have higher evolvability but reduced demographic stability. This trade-off significantly influences the extinction probabilities of populations undergoing fast trait changes in stochastic environments.

How does genetic architecture affect eco-evolutionary dynamics? A theoretical perspective

Masato Yamamichi

Summary: Recent studies have highlighted the significance of feedbacks between contemporary rapid evolution and ecological dynamics. However, most studies in this area have been focused on ecological aspects and adaptation at the phenotypic level, neglecting the genetic architecture of evolutionary processes. Empirical studies have often compared ecological dynamics when a species has single or multiple genotypes. Theoretical studies tend to use models of quantitative traits or Mendelian traits to investigate evolutionary dynamics. Nevertheless, it is well recognized that genetic architecture can influence short-term evolutionary dynamics in population genetics. Theoretical approaches integrating population genetics, ecology, and nonlinear time-series analyses can facilitate the synthesis of functional genomics and eco-evolutionary dynamics, particularly with emerging big data.

Thermal acclimation influences the growth and toxin production of freshwater cyanobacteria

Tamara J. Layden et al.

Summary: A central goal of aquatic science is to understand the ecological factors that promote harmful cyanobacterial blooms, especially in light of climate change. Acclimation of cyanobacteria to temperature changes significantly affects their growth and toxin production, which can in turn determine the frequency, severity, and harmful effects of cyanobacterial blooms in aquatic habitats.

Context-dependent trait covariances: how plasticity shapes behavioral syndromes

David J. Mitchell et al.

Summary: The study of behavioral syndromes aims to understand correlations between different behaviors, while behavioral plasticity explores variations in animal responses to environmental changes. These two phenomena, although closely related, are often discussed separately, leading to a missed opportunity to fully integrate these concepts.

Adaptation is influenced by the complexity of environmental change during evolution in a dynamic environment

Sebastien Boyer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of unpredictable changes in the environment on organism evolution. By alternating between two conditions with different timescales of switching, researchers found that the switch rate and order of conditions influenced adaptation, leading to varied genetic and phenotypic outcomes. These findings suggest that adaptive outcomes are dependent on the specific nature of prevailing environmental conditions.

Effects of pulsed resources on the dynamics of seed consumer populations: a comparative demographic study in wild boar

Marlene Gamelon et al.

Summary: This study fills the knowledge gap regarding the effects of mast seeding on the dynamics of seed consumer populations, revealing heterogeneity in demographic responses to mast seeding within and among populations. The results show that acorn production has positive effects on reproduction and growth of small-sized females, with survival being less influenced, indicating variation in demographic responses to mast seeding.

PHENOTYPIC PLASTICITY MASKS RANGE-WIDE GENETIC DIFFERENTIATION FOR VEGETATIVE BUT NOT REPRODUCTIVE TRAITS IN A SHORT-LIVED PLANT

Jesus Villellas et al.

Summary: Genetic differentiation and phenotypic plasticity play different roles in shaping intraspecific trait variation, with reproductive traits more genetically determined in short-lived plants. Field observations suggest that genetic differentiation may be inferred from observational data only for traits closely related to fitness.

Temperature-mediated variation in selection on offspring size: A multi-cohort field study

Summary: Research has shown that there is a relationship between offspring size and temperature, with offspring size tracking local environmental temperature. Maternal adaptability may affect the relationship between offspring size and performance, and temperature can also influence this relationship.

Fluctuating Environments Maintain Genetic Diversity through Neutral Fitness Effects and Balancing Selection

Farah Abdul-Rahman et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that in static environments, a small number of high-fitness genotypes dominate the population, leading to decreased genetic diversity. In contrast, fluctuating environments are enriched in genotypes with neutral fitness effects, contributing to the maintenance of genetic diversity. Oscillatory behaviors in response to environmental fluctuation play a role in balancing selection and maintaining genetic diversity.
