Urban air mobility: A comprehensive review and comparative analysis with autonomous and electric ground transportation for informing future research

Laurie A. Garrow et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a meta analysis and comprehensive review of urban air mobility (UAM) to guide future research directions. Potential research directions identified include refined demand models, high-fidelity simulation models, consideration of one-way demand and parking constraints, and evaluation of realistic energy profiles for UAM vehicles.

Summary: This study calculates the air taxi commuter demand for the 40 most populous combined statistical areas (CSAs) in the U.S. using cell phone data, census data, and a mode choice model. The demand is concentrated in a few CSAs, with New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. generating 33 percent of the overall air taxi demand.

Integrated Network Design and Demand Forecast for On-Demand Urban Air Mobility

Zhiqiang Wu et al.

Summary: Urban air mobility (UAM) is a new concept that aims to provide an alternative way of transporting passengers and goods in urban areas using low-altitude airspace. This study uses integer programming and a solution algorithm to determine the optimal locations of vertiports and user allocation, considering interactions between vertiport locations and potential UAM demand. The findings offer insights for municipal decision-makers and UAM operators on network design and pricing strategies to enhance the efficiency and revenue generation of UAM services.

Urban Air Mobility: History, Ecosystem, Market Potential, and Challenges

Adam P. Cohen et al.

Summary: Since the early 20(th) century, inventors have been conceptualizing flying cars and other urban aerial transportation. This research provides insights into the history, current developments, and potential barriers to growth and mainstreaming of Urban Air Mobility (UAM), which envisions a safe, sustainable, affordable, and accessible air transportation system for passenger mobility, goods delivery, and emergency services within metropolitan areas.

Advanced Air Mobility: Demand Analysis and Market Potential of the Airport Shuttle and Air Taxi Markets

Rohit Goyal et al.

Summary: Advanced air mobility (AAM) is a concept that enables consumers to access on-demand air mobility services through an integrated transportation network, but faces challenges such as autonomous flight technology, infrastructure availability, airspace integration, and competition with other modes of transportation. A demand analysis estimates that the potential market share for AAM air taxis and airport shuttles is 0.5%, with the ability to replace non-discretionary trips but limited by consumer willingness to pay for discretionary trips. The study suggests that AAM passenger services could see a daily demand of 82,000 passengers served by approximately 4,000 aircraft, with an annual market valuation of 2.5 billion USD in the U.S. under the most conservative scenario.
