Experimental investigation of failure process and characteristics in circular tunnels under different stress states and internal unloading conditions

Xuefeng Si et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure process and evolution mechanisms in circular tunnels under a complex stress path. Drilling unloading causes damage to the surrounding rock, inducing a strength-weakening effect. Increasing lateral stress or initial hydrostatic pressure strengthens the surrounding rock.

Experimental investigation on rockburst process and characteristics of a circular opening in layered rock under three-dimensional stress conditions

Xuefeng Si et al.

Summary: The study found that the bedding angle has a significant influence on the failure process and characteristics of circular hole sidewalls, affecting the failure modes of surrounding rock and the stability of the rock mass. A higher bedding angle can lead to changes in the failure pattern of the rock and may affect the stability of the surrounding rock.

Suppressing rockburst by increasing the tensile strength of rock surface: An experimental study

Xiaochuan Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, the rockburst process and mechanism were investigated based on laboratory tests. A support strategy using high tensile strength material to increase the tangential tensile strength of rock surfaces and suppress rockburst was proposed. The results showed that increasing surface tensile strength effectively reduced the severity of rockburst.

Mechanical properties and rockburst proneness of phyllite under uniaxial compression

Xue-feng Si et al.

Summary: The influence of bedding angle beta on the mechanical properties and rockburst proneness of rocks was investigated through uniaxial compression tests. The results showed that as beta increased, there were changes in peak stress, peak strain, cumulative acoustic emission counts, and potential energy of the elastic strain. The failure mode evolved from tensile splitting along the bedding plane to shear slip along the weak bedding plane, and ultimately to tensile splitting across the bedding plane. Additionally, rockburst proneness varied with different values of beta, with different types of rockbursts occurring.

Influence of excavation damaged zone on the dynamic response of circular cavity subjected to transient stress wave

Huatao Zhao et al.

Summary: The research utilizes the Hoek Brown criteria to calculate the distribution of excavation damaged zone around the cavity at different burial depths, and investigates the dynamic responses of the excavation-damaged cavity under dynamic disturbance using the SEM method. Influencing factors such as the shapes of EDZ, the incident direction of dynamic disturbance, and the dynamic source frequency are identified.

Experimental Investigation of Spalling Failure of D-Shaped Tunnel Under Three-Dimensional High-Stress Conditions in Hard Rock

Xuefeng Si et al.

Summary: The study found that the failure process of the D-shaped hole can be divided into four stages and exhibits tensile failure characteristics. Increasing lateral stress can reduce the severity of spalling failure and depth of the notch. Compared to circular hole sidewalls, the initial failure vertical stress of D-shaped hole sidewalls is higher and characterized mainly by static failure.
