A novel fatigue-oxidation-creep life prediction method under non-proportional loading

Dao-Hang Li et al.

Summary: A new life assessment framework is proposed based on elastic-viscoplastic modeling and damage behavior for structural components under multiaxial nonproportional loading at high temperature. The framework utilizes a viscoplastic constitutive model to capture non-proportional hardening effect and a damage model to assess failure life comprehensively. Evaluation of the framework at 650 degrees C shows errors within a factor of 2 under proportional and non-proportional fatigue loadings.

The effect of dwell on thermomechanical fatigue in superaustenitic steel Sanicro 25

Roman Petras et al.

Summary: The superaustenitic steel Sanicro 25 was subjected to out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue cycles with dwell at peak temperature within the range of 250°C to 700°C. The effects of dwell on cyclic response, internal structure, and damage mechanism were studied, evaluating cyclic hardening/softening curves, stress-strain curves, and fatigue life curves. Various advanced microscopy techniques were used to analyze internal structure, nanoparticle obstacles for dislocation motion, and mechanisms responsible for fatigue crack nucleation and propagation. Discussions were made on the effects of dwells in in-phase and out-of-phase cycling on fatigue behavior, internal structure modification, and damage mechanisms.

Multiaxial low-cycle thermo-mechanical fatigue of a low-alloy martensitic steel: Cyclic mechanical behaviour, damage mechanisms and life prediction

Michal Bartosak et al.

Summary: The study found that non-proportional loading increases fatigue damage and decreases observed lifetime in low-cycle fatigue tests. A TMF damage model was proposed to account for the effects of multiaxial loading and temperature variations. The model, based on a critical plane approach, incorporates fatigue, oxidation, and creep forms of damage and is validated against a large experimental database.

The effect of dwell times on the thermomechanical fatigue life performance of grade P92 steel at intermediate and low strain amplitudes

Maria Juergens et al.

Summary: An extended TMF test program on grade P92 steel in the temperature range of 620 degrees C-300 degrees C was conducted, revealing continuous cyclic softening at all strain amplitudes. Fractographic analyses indicated creep-dominated damage for in-phase (IP) tests and fatigue-dominated damage for out-of-phase (OP) tests. The study found that subcritical growth of cracks governs failure in the investigated range of strain amplitudes.

A comparative study between in- and out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue behaviour of a single-crystal superalloy

Mikael Segersall et al.

Summary: The study reveals that there is no significant difference in fatigue lives between in-phase and out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue of a single-crystal superalloy, with localized deformation bands being the main deformation mechanism and crack initiation preferred in these bands. Other TMF mechanisms, such as recrystallization and oxidation, are also discussed.
