Explaining Rice and Wheat Yield Gaps in Eastern Indian States: Insights from Stochastic Frontier Analysis

Summary: This study aims to estimate and explain the yield gaps in India's agricultural systems. The yield gaps for paddy and wheat are found to be 20-40% and 20-21% respectively. Factors contributing to the yield gaps include suboptimal and supra-optimal resource use, droughts and floods, and state specificity. Supporting optimal resource use through institutional mechanisms holds more promise in reducing the yield gaps.

Over the last 60 years, anthropogenic climate change has decreased global agricultural total factor productivity by 21%, with stronger effects in warmer regions. Global agriculture is becoming more vulnerable to ongoing climate change.
