Structure of the south-central Taiwan fold-and-thrust belt: Testing the viability of the model

D. Brown et al.

Summary: This paper presents a structural model for the south-central Taiwan fold-and-thrust belt, which provides a consistent explanation for seismicity, GPS, and topography data. The model suggests that the fold-and-thrust belt is a west-verging thrust system with breaching faults inherited from the continental margin. It also involves metamorphic basement rocks and has systematic changes in GPS displacement vectors and strain rates across transverse zones.

Development of an intra-carbonate detachment during thrusting: The variable influence of pressure solution on deformation style, Khao Khwang Fold and Thrust Belt, Thailand

C. K. Morley et al.

Summary: This study describes an atypical detachment zone in Thailand occurring within a relatively strong Permian carbonate lithology, in contrast to classic detachment zones defined by weak lithologies. The key differences between stratigraphic members that led to the development of this detachment zone are bedding spacing and clay content.

Active tectonics along the Sheladiz seismogenic fault in the Western Zagros fold-thrust belt, Kurdistan, Northern Iraq

Jamal A. H. Doski

Summary: This study presents a clear case of seismic activity caused by the Quaternary reactivation of a seismogenic blind basement fault. The findings suggest that earthquakes in the Sheladiz area are mainly produced by left-lateral strike-slip movements along a seismically active basement fault. The stress inversion results indicate a predominant N-S oriented maximum compressive stress in the area, supporting active deformation rates along the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone.

Geomorphology of the northwestern Kurdistan Region of Iraq: landscapes of the Zagros Mountains drained by the Tigris and Great Zab Rivers

Luca Forti et al.

Summary: This study presents the geomorphological map of the northwestern part of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, highlighting the influence of tectonic activity associated with the Arabia-Eurasia convergence and Neogene climate change. The evolution of landforms and fluvial pathways in this region are shaped by major rivers, anticlinal ridges, syncline troughs, and the Zagros orogen. Furthermore, the impact of fluctuating arid and wet periods during the Quaternary, as well as intensified Holocene human occupation and agricultural activities, have also contributed to the landscape evolution in Mesopotamia.

THE ROLE OF MULTIPLE WEAK LITHOLOGIES IN THE DEFORMATION OF COVER UNITS IN THE NORTHWESTERN SEGMENT OF THE ZAGROS FOLD-AND-THRUST BELT

Hemin A. Koyi et al.

Summary: The geometry, kinematics, and dynamics of fold-and-thrust belts are influenced by the mechanical behavior of the basal decollement and weak lithologies within the stratigraphy. In the Zagros fold-and-thrust belt, mechanically weak lithologies compartmentalize the stratigraphy, causing decoupling of deformation at different depth levels. This decoupling may impact hydrocarbon exploration due to potential offsets between surface and subsurface structures and traps.

The fold-thrust belt stress cycle: Superposition of normal, strike-slip, and thrust faulting deformation regimes

David A. Ferrill et al.

Summary: The interaction of evolving stress regimes and mechanical stratigraphy leads to a progressive deformation sequence in fold-thrust belts and foreland areas. Mesoscale deformation can include tensile, hybrid, shear, compactive shear, and compactive failure, occurring simultaneously in adjacent layers. A conceptual model is presented to explain the development and eventual waning of fold-thrust belt activity, identifying five stages of deformation. This model can be used to predict mesostructural suites, explain apparently anomalous structures, and infer paleostress history.

Pliocene growth of the Dowlatabad syncline in Frontal Fars arc: Folding propagation across the Zagros Fold Belt, Iran

Mahdi Najafi et al.

Summary: The integration of biostratigraphy, strontium isotope stratigraphy, and magnetostratigraphy provided precise dating of sedimentary evolution in the Fars arc, revealing the migration of sedimentary belts and propagation of folding. High rates of folding propagation suggest an efficient detachment level at the base of the deformed Arabian sedimentary cover, influencing the deformation propagation within the cover sequence and understanding the in-sequence deformation of the Zagros Simply Folded Belt.

Characterization and analysis of naturally fractured gas reservoirs based on stimulated reservoir volume and petro-physical parameters

Ali Al-Rubaye et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mechanism, trends, and patterns of fracture formation in carbonate reservoirs through combining various types of data and using statistical and mathematical methods for fracture modeling. Economic producible zones were identified in the Zubair gas reservoir, with the dominant lithology being limestone and thin shale layers.
