The contribution of global aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing for 2000 to 2018

D. S. Lee et al.

Summary: Global aviation operations contribute to anthropogenic climate change by emitting carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, water vapor, soot and sulfate aerosols, and increasing cloudiness due to contrail formation. The growth of aviation activity and climate change impact has shown a marked increase in recent years, with contrail cirrus being the largest contributor to the warming effect.

Fossil CO2 emissions in the post-COVID-19 era

Corinne Le Quere et al.

Summary: Five years after the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement, global CO2 emissions growth has started to slow down. The trajectory of global CO2 emissions has been drastically altered by the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. New policy choices are needed to address the contradictory effects of post-COVID-19 investments in fossil fuel-based infrastructure and the recent strengthening of climate targets to sustain a decline in global emissions in the post-COVID-19 era.

Sustainable aviation fuels and imminent technologies - CO2 emissions evolution towards 2050

Ivo Abrantes et al.

Summary: The aviation industry has promoted various approaches to reduce CO2 emissions, including improving aircraft technology and using sustainable low-carbon fuels. However, achieving carbon-neutral growth and a 50% reduction in net emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels will require a combination of imminent aircraft technologies with a higher introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Results show that these goals cannot be met solely by the current strategies, and carbon-neutral growth may only be possible by 2040 with the right combination of technologies and SAF introduction rates.
