Simplified method for performance-based seismic design of suction caissons supporting jacket offshore wind turbines

M. Antoniou et al.

Summary: This paper studies the performance of Offshore Wind Turbines (OWTs) founded on Suction Bucket Jackets (SBJs) in clay under combined wind and seismic loading. It proposes a hybrid method for performance-based assessment of SBJ OWTs, which can effectively predict the H-M failure envelope and co-seismic caisson settlements.

Shaking table test on seismic responses of a wind turbine tower subjected to pulse-type near-field ground motions

Qianqian Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of near-field seismic records on a 2.0 MW land-based wind turbine through shaking table tests. The results show that pulse-type near-field records generally amplify acceleration responses at the bottom and top of the tower, with Chi-Chi records having particularly obvious effects on the acceleration and displacement responses of the tower top, nacelle, and hub.

Centrifuge shaking table tests on offshore wind turbine bucket foundation in mildly inclined liquefiable seabed

Xue-Qian Qu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the seismic response of suction bucket foundations for offshore wind turbines in liquefiable ground through centrifuge shaking table tests. It is found that horizontal displacement of the seabed during earthquakes can lead to excessive rotation and displacement of the foundation. The inside-bucket soil plays a crucial role in stabilizing the system during earthquakes, limiting the displacement and rotation of the foundation and acceleration of the turbine.

Behavior of a Monopod Bucket Foundation Subjected to Combined Moment and Horizontal Loads in Silty Sand

Yun Wook Choo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of bucket foundations in silty sand under horizontal and moment loading through model tests. It was found that the horizontal capacity increased with decreasing loading height, and a horizontal-moment failure envelope was proposed. Additionally, increasing loading rate augmented the horizontal failure load, and the leeward outside of the bucket foundation experienced significantly higher pressure.

Numerical simulation of suction bucket foundation response located in liquefiable sand under earthquakes

Bin Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of suction bucket foundations in liquefiable sand under earthquakes, using an advanced liquefaction model. The results show that offshore wind turbines may experience permanent displacements and tilt due to earthquakes and liquefaction, indicating the need to consider seismic load and liquefaction in the design.
