Edge and Point-Defect Induced Electronic and Magnetic Properties in Monolayer PtSe2

Jingfeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electronic structure of edges and point defects in 2D-PtSe2 using STM and DFT. The experiment finds that stoichiometric zigzag edge terminations are energetically favored, and Se-vacancies, Pt-vacancies, and Se-antisites are identified as dominant defects in PtSe2. Defects in PtSe2 are found to induce magnetism, with Pt-vacancies exhibiting spin polarized states. These atomic-scale insights into defect-induced electronic states provide fundamental support for defect engineering of PtSe2-monolayers and the potential for engineering magnetic properties in PtSe2 nanoribbons.

Odd-even layer-number effect of valence-band spin splitting in WTe2

By using laser-based microfocused angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, the electronic band dispersions of multilayer WTe2 (2-5 layers) are examined. The findings show that when the number of layers increases from 2 to 3, holelike valence bands start to cross the Fermi level, indicating an insulator-semimetal transition, and a spin splitting of valence bands is observed in even-layered samples as a result of stronger structural asymmetry. The study demonstrates the potential for manipulating energy-scale band and spin through the stacking procedure of finite layers.

Summary: Weyl semimetal Td-phase WTe2 with strong spin-orbit coupling is promising as a spin source material, and the generation of out-of-plane polarized spin in centimeter-scale CVD-grown thin films has been demonstrated. The in-plane and out-of-plane spin conductivities were found to be 7.36 x 10(3) (PLANCK CONSTANT OVER TWO PI/2e) (ohm m)(-1) and 1.76 x 10(3) (PLANCK CONSTANT OVER TWO PI/2e) (ohm m)(-1) in 5 nm-WTe2, respectively. Additionally, current-induced magnetization switching in WTe2/NiFe at room temperature suggests potential innovations in spintronic devices based on Weyl semimetals.

Enhanced electron-phonon coupling in doubly aligned hexagonal boron nitride bilayer graphene heterostructure

Manabendra Kuiri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrical and magnetotransport properties of bilayer graphene encapsulated between two hexagonal boron nitride crystals, revealing the formation of two moire superlattices and the appearance of resistivity peaks at different carrier density regions. Additionally, the resistivity shows a linear increment with temperature and is attributed to the enhanced electron-phonon coupling in the reconstructed minibands. The results demonstrate the ability of doubly aligned moire systems to modify the electronic properties of multilayered heterostructures.

Summary: First-principles calculations were used to investigate the electronic structures and topological phases of magnetic layered materials MnBi2Te4, MnBi2Se4, and MnSb2Te4 under different conditions. The compounds exhibited various properties such as topological insulators, Weyl semimetals, and Chern insulators depending on factors like film thickness, strains, and spin-orbit coupling strength.

Temperature Dependent In-Plane Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in HfTe5 Thin Layers

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The study reports the observation of in-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect in non-magnetic HfTe5 thin layers. The anisotropic magnetoresistance is strongly dependent on the critical resistivity anomaly temperature T-p, showing negative magnetoresistance below T-p. The negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in HfTe5 thin layers may be attributed to reduced spin scattering caused by in-plane magnetic field driven coupling between top and bottom surface states.

Enhancement of spin-orbit coupling in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 films by Sb doping

Yusuke Nakazawa et al.

Summary: The study shows a significant enhancement of magnetotransport properties in films of Cd3As2 doped with Sb, possibly due to an increase in spin-orbit scattering rate. By comparing with other compound semiconductors, we discuss the potential origins behind this phenomenon. Sb-doped Cd3As2 is a promising system for further investigations and functionalization of topological Dirac semimetals.

Proximity-Induced Magnetism Enhancement Emerged in Chiral Magnet MnSi/Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 Bilayer

Won-Young Choi et al.

Summary: The proximity effect between magnetic materials and topological surface states enhances the localized spins, persisting up to temperatures above 300 K. Observing the increased charge carrier density and decreased carrier mobility near the Curie temperature in the MnSi/Bi2Se3 bilayer further supports this effect. This finding provides a new platform for future spintronic devices by incorporating materials with distinct topological phases.
