Photo- and Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 over Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derived Oxides: A Correlation of the Reaction Mechanism with the Electronic Structure

Soumitra Payra et al.

Summary: A Ce/Ti-based bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) showed better photocatalytic reduction of CO2 compared to an isoreticular pristine monometallic Ce-terephthalate MOF due to its highly selective CO2 adsorption capability, optimized band gaps, higher flux of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and a lower rate of recombination. The inclusion of an amine functional group into the linker led to the reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+, and the presence of low-lying Ti(3d) orbitals facilitated the photo-reduction reaction.

Visible-Light Driven CO2 Reduction to CO by Co3O4 Supported on Tungsten Oxide

Ya-Li Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the support effect and interface effect on a homogeneous-heterogeneous hybrid CO2 reduction photocatalytic system. Co-based photocatalysts supported on various oxides were synthesized and their performance for visible-light driven CO2 reduction was evaluated. The WO3 supported Co-based photocatalyst exhibited the highest CO generation rate, selectivity, and apparent quantum yield. The superior performance of this catalyst is attributed to the well-matched band structure, tight interface structure, and dispersion effect provided by WO3.

Oxygen vacancies induced by charge compensation tailoring Ni-doped Co3O4 nanoflakes for efficient hydrogen evolution

Wenda Zhong et al.

Summary: The modulation of catalysts' electronic structure plays a significant role in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Doping octahedral Ni2+ ions into the Co3O4 lattice compensates for the charge and creates oxygen vacancies to maintain electric neutrality. The oxygen vacancies cause local lattice distortion, leading to concomitant electron redistribution and optimizing the d-band center of Ni-Co3O4. This acceleration of charge transfer and matter conversion enhances the HER kinetics of Ni-Co3O4.

Enhanced photocatalytic overall water splitting via MOF-derived tetragonal BiVO4-based solid solution

Zhidong Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, BiVO4-based solid solutions, Bi0.5Y0.5VO4, were prepared using the MOF-derived method. Characterization of the samples revealed that Y sources facilitated the generation of tetragonal phase BiVO4, which played a crucial role in enhancing the photocatalytic overall water splitting property. Additionally, the deposition of metallic Pt particles as co-catalysts resulted in a decrease in the ratio of H-2:O-2, suggesting the emergence of an electric field shield effect to regulate the interfacial internal electric field further.
