Maternal and infant hospitalization costs associated with maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index in California, 2007-2011

Brooke F. Mischkot et al.

Summary: The number of overweight or obese pregnant women is increasing in the United States. This study estimated the costs associated with pre-pregnancy BMI in a large cohort of pregnant women and found significant differences in hospitalization costs between different BMI categories. This study provides important insights into the relationship between pre-pregnancy BMI and healthcare costs.

Longitudinal and cross-sectional associations between the dietary inflammatory index and objectively and subjectively measured sleep among police officers

Michael D. Wirth et al.

Summary: Police officers who consume more pro-inflammatory diets may experience decreased sleep quality but improved subjective sleep quality. With the increase of Energy-density Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII) scores over time, there is a longer wake-after-sleep-onset, especially for officers working day shifts. Conversely, an increase in E-DII score is associated with an improvement in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score.

Longitudinal associations of pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain with maternal urinary metabolites: an NYU CHES study

Sara E. Long et al.

Summary: This study explored the associations between pre-pregnancy body mass index (pBMI), gestational weight gain (GWG), and maternal urinary metabolites throughout pregnancy. The results showed that pregnant individuals with obesity had lower levels of long-chain acylcarnitine, phosphatidylcholine, and glucogenic amino acids, while GWG was associated with lower taurine levels and specific acylcarnitine species. These findings emphasize the importance of both preconception and prenatal maternal health.

Summary: The perinatal period is crucial for bone mass accrual, and the effect of maternal gestational/type 2 diabetes on infant bone mass accrual is still uncertain. This study found that infants born to mothers with well-controlled gestational/type 2 diabetes have normal bone mass accrual.

Effect of sleep duration on dietary intake, desire to eat, measures of food intake and metabolic hormones: A systematic review of clinical trials

Samira Soltanieh et al.

Summary: Research suggests that insufficient sleep may lead to increased energy intake, weight gain, and elevated appetite and hunger, while protein and carbohydrate intake, total energy expenditure, and respiratory quotient remain unaffected. Furthermore, sleep duration does not seem to have an impact on serum leptin, ghrelin, and cortisol concentrations.

Summary: Increasing sleep duration during pregnancy is associated with improved fasting glucose levels and lower energy intake, leading to potential benefits in cardiometabolic health. However, changes in sleep duration did not significantly affect plasma markers, energy intake, or weight gain.

The Dietary Inflammatory Index and Human Health: An Umbrella Review of Meta-Analyses of Observational Studies

Wolfgang Marx et al.

Summary: This study conducted an umbrella review and integrated meta-analyses to investigate the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and health outcomes based on observational data. The findings suggested that adherence to a pro-inflammatory dietary pattern was significantly associated with increased risk of many chronic disease outcomes, although the evidence strength was limited for most outcomes. Further prospective studies are needed to improve the precision of the effect size.

Summary: The prevalence of insomnia symptoms during pregnancy is around 38.2%, with the highest rates in the third trimester. Trimester was found to significantly influence the prevalence of insomnia symptoms, while other variables did not show the same impact. Future research should focus on the efficacy and safety of insomnia treatments for pregnant women.
