Three-dimensional C3N5/RGO aerogels with enhanced visible-light response and electron-hole separation efficiency for photocatalytic uranium reduction

Summary: Uranium is a critical resource in the nuclear fuel cycle and a global environmental pollutant with dual effects of radioactivity and chemical toxicity. Reducing soluble U(VI) to relatively immovable U(IV) through photocatalytic technology can effectively decrease environmental pollution and enhance photocatalytic efficiency. The novel C3N5/reduced graphene oxide (C3N5/RGO) aerogel photocatalyst, with its 3D macroscopic morphology and microscopic 2D/2D Mott Schottky heterostructure, demonstrates high uranium removal rates and pollution resistance, offering a feasible solution for treating wastewater with nuclear radioactivity.

Removed heavy metal ions from wastewater reuse for chemiluminescence: Successive application of lignin-based composite hydrogels

Summary: The novel sulfomethylated lignin-grafted-polyacrylic acid (SL-g-PAA) hydrogel was fabricated for efficient removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater, and successfully reused for chemiluminescence. The hydrogel showed high content of lignin and exhibited efficient removal of various metal ions, while the spent hydrogel was reused to develop a new CL system with high intensity and long duration time. The combination of facile fabrication process, renewable raw materials, and ingenious strategy for successive application in adsorption and CL suggest great potential for application in wastewater treatment, biological imaging, and cold light sources.

Solar light-responsive CdS/UiO-66-NH2 for ultrafast uranium reduction from uranium-containing mine wastewater without external sacrificial agents

Summary: In this study, CdS/UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles photocatalysts were successfully prepared and applied for the efficient reduction of uranium hexavalent without sacrificial agents. The results showed that under sunlight irradiation, a significant amount of U(VI) in the mine wastewater can be removed. This work represents an important step towards remediation of radioactive environment from mine wastewater, and promotes the extensive application of photocatalysis technology.

Lignin-based nanoparticles for recovery and separation of phosphate and reused as renewable magnetic fertilizers

Summary: Magnetic lignin-based nanoparticles were developed for phosphorus adsorption and slow-release fertilizer, showing potential as efficiently separated and renewable nanomaterial for removal of low concentration phosphate in wastewater treatment and sustainable agriculture. The nanoparticles released increasing amounts of iron and phosphorus in soil, and can be separated with high recovery ratio and regenerated for phosphate recovery again.

The obtained materials exhibited high Hg(II) uptake capacity and rate, and could be utilized as efficient catalysts for organic transformations. This work provides a new and facile method for preparing chitosan-based functional materials with promising application potentials in environmental and catalytic fields.

Heterogeneous rod-like Ni@C composites toward strong and stable microwave absorption performance

Summary: In this study, heterogeneous rod-like Ni@Carbon (Ni@C) composites with tunable nano-micro structure and electromagnetic parameters were successfully synthesized by a handy hydrothermal reaction and subsequent calcination treatment. The Ni@C composite showed favorable microwave absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -58.7 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.4 GHz. The carbon matrix of Ni@C also served as a protective layer for Ni NPs, providing stable microwave absorbing performance even after one year measurement.
