Vision Processing for Assistive Vision: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

Jack White et al.

Summary: There is increasing interest in using computer vision and machine learning to enhance human decision making with computer-mediated assistive vision systems. Retinal implants are a rapidly advancing technology offering individuals suffering vision loss due to retinal dystrophies, an opportunity to restore partial vision. By utilizing deep reinforcement learning to learn task-salient visual filters for prosthetic vision, functional outcomes can be enhanced with camera-captured input in real-time applications.

Sequential epiretinal stimulation improves discrimination in simple shape discrimination tasks only

Breanne Christie et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of sequential stimulation for producing clearer shapes in the retina, which can be used for restoring basic vision. Sequential stimulation outperforms simultaneous stimulation in simple tasks, but has limited success in more complex tasks. The selection of electrodes with similar shapes and sizes is crucial for the efficacy of sequential stimulation.

A Second-Generation (44-Channel) Suprachoroidal Retinal Prosthesis: Long-Term Observation of the Electrode-Tissue Interface

Samuel A. Titchener et al.

Summary: This study reports the long-term observations of the electrode-tissue interface and perceptual stability in humans after chronic stimulation with a 44-channel suprachoroidal retinal implant. The results showed stable electrode impedances, small individual changes in perceptual electrical thresholds, and no clinically significant increase in electrode-retina distances after a period of settling after surgery.

Semantic translation of face image with limited pixels for simulated prosthetic vision

Xuan Xia et al.

Summary: This study addresses the issue of limited pixel images in prosthetic vision for facial perception by constructing a face semantic transformation model called F2Pnet. A pixel face database is established and a new training strategy is proposed. The results show that pixel faces have better identifiability in terms of characteristics and expressions compared to comparable methods, which is significant for improving the social ability of blind individuals.

Toward the development of a color visual prosthesis

Vernon L. Towle et al.

Summary: This study discusses the advantages of color prosthetic systems in reducing the likelihood of epileptic seizures. A 'hybrid' mode of stimulation is proposed to provide both B/W and color stimulation, to obtain color information without reducing spatial resolution. Software implementation strategies are discussed, along with the advantages and challenges of possible color prosthetic systems.

Naturalistic spatiotemporal modulation of epiretinal stimulation increases the response persistence of retinal ganglion cell

Naig Aurelia Ludmilla Chenais et al.

Summary: Artificial vision in profoundly blind patients faces challenges due to the rapid fading of phosphenes upon repetitive stimulation. However, spatial and temporal modulation of electric pulses can prolong the response of retinal ganglion cells, potentially improving the clinical efficacy of retinal implants.

Summary: This study introduces a novel approach for implantable neural interfaces, utilizing a biological intermediary to enhance specificity and longevity through optogenetic manipulation. In vitro experiments demonstrate successful axonal outgrowth, reproducible cytoarchitecture, and simultaneous optical stimulation and recording of these living electrodes. Additionally, in vivo transplantation and integration of these optically controllable living electrodes in rat cortex provide proof of concept for this new neural interface paradigm.

What do blind people see with retinal prostheses? Observations and qualitative reports of epiretinal implant users

Cordelia Erickson-Davis et al.

Summary: Despite the approval and commercial availability of retinal implants for over 5 years, few data are available to answer basic questions about artificial vision outcomes. A study conducted in France and the UK with implant recipients of Argus II or IRIS II devices revealed that artificial vision is a highly specific, learned skill that requires bodily techniques, associative learning, and deductive reasoning to interpret surroundings. The percept does not transform over time, but recipients become better at interpreting the signals received through cognitive techniques.

CT Assessment of Intraorbital Cable Movement of Electronic Subretinal Prosthesis in Three Different Surgical Approaches

Hanna Faber et al.

Summary: This study investigated three surgical routing techniques for intraorbital cables in electronic retinal implants and found that arcuated cable routes significantly reduce cable movement and bending. The preferred method to minimize bending radius variation and prolong survival time of electronic subretinal implants is a parabulbar loop due to its easier surgical procedure. CT analysis of cable bending is crucial for determining optimal surgical routing techniques for durability in vivo.
