A GIS framework for the application of the land degradation neutrality concept in Mediterranean landscapes

Mario J. Al Sayah et al.

Summary: This study integrates land cover suitability, soil erosion, and sediment transport as complementary indicators within the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) framework. Using the Lebanese Nahr Ibrahim basin as a case study, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of LDN in improving land cover suitability and reducing soil erosion and sediment transport risks.

H2020 projects and EU research needs for nature-based adaptation solutions

Mario J. Al Sayah et al.

Summary: This paper examines the documentation produced by 21 Horizon 2020 projects on the use of Nature Based Solutions for climate change adaptation. It provides an updated state-of-the-art on current knowledge and identifies research needs. The main objective is to inform future research directions on Nature Based Solutions for climate change adaptation, complementing the 2021 European strategy. The findings reflect outcomes from completed projects and highlight the importance of further developing the scientific basis behind these solutions.

Obstacles to the Development of Integrated Land-Use Planning in Developing Countries: The Case of Paraguay

Sonia Delphin et al.

Summary: Land-use planning is crucial in considering environmental, economic, and social factors. However, there is a lack of research on its practical application and challenges, especially in developing countries, like Paraguay. Through expert surveys, we explore the feasibility and relevance of integrated land-use planning and data acquisition in such contexts. The results show that developing an integrated land-use plan in developing countries can be difficult due to data availability, political will, stakeholder engagement, and resource constraints. We provide examples of innovative approaches to overcome these challenges and improve land-use planning processes in Paraguay and similar contexts in the Global South.

A framework for investigating the land degradation neutrality-Disaster risk reduction nexus at the sub-national scales

Mario J. Al Sayah et al.

Summary: Specific guidelines and a detailed land classification method were proposed to support the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) concept, complemented by the introduction of indicator alpha. Findings revealed that Aley's land cover development did not consider land potential or hazard potentiality, leading to degraded or at-risk lands. The LDN intervention aimed to optimize land use by shifting a portion of lands to adequately used states.

On the use of the Land Degradation Neutrality concept in mediterranean watersheds for land restoration and erosion counteraction

Mario J. Al Sayah et al.

Summary: This study implemented the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) concept in the Nahr Ibrahim watershed in Lebanon, using soil erosion as an indicator and proposing an LDN scenario for land restoration and erosion prevention measures. The results showed the efficiency of LDN in not only land restoration, but also as a powerful counter-erosion measure.

Evaluating the Implementation of the Build-Back-Better Concept for Critical Infrastructure Systems: Lessons from Saint-Martin's Island Following Hurricane Irma

Rita Der Sarkissian et al.

Summary: This study fills a gap in the limited literature on the concept of Build-Back-Better (BBB) critical infrastructure (CI) by offering a conceptual analysis of the operational aspects, with a focus on the term "Better". By evaluating the state of Saint-Martin's CI before and after Hurricane Irma, the study reveals indicators for reconstruction projects and proposes a guidance tool for efficient planning and evaluation. Key findings redefine the BBB CI equation as Build-Back-resilient, Build-Back-sustainable, and Build-Back-accessible, providing insights for operators, stakeholders, and practitioners to contextualize the term Better in their CI systems.

Urban agriculture ? A necessary pathway towards urban resilience and global sustainability?

Johannes Langemeyer et al.

Summary: This essay discusses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on urban food security and urban agriculture, as well as the blind spots in urban planning, and proposes the importance of stronger and joint consideration of urban risks, vulnerabilities, urban metabolism, and ecosystem services in land-use decision-making.
