Estimating quantitative physiological and morphological tissue parameters of murine tumor models using hyperspectral imaging and optical profilometry

Tadej Tomanic et al.

Summary: Understanding tumors and their microenvironment is crucial for accurate disease diagnosis. This study combines hyperspectral imaging and three-dimensional optical profilometry to capture images and shapes of subcutaneously grown murine tumor models. The results show that tumors can be distinguished from healthy tissue based on tissue parameters, and blood vessels have higher blood oxygenation than the surrounding tissue. Additionally, tumor volumes calculated using this system agree well with manual measurements. This research suggests that combining hyperspectral imaging and optical profilometry can provide quantitative information about tumors and improve disease diagnosis accuracy.

Hyperspectral imaging and machine learning in food microbiology: Developments and challenges in detection of bacterial, fungal, and viral contaminants

Aswathi Soni et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the work done in the field of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for detecting foreign particles in food, with a focus on challenges, risks, and research gaps. The application of machine learning and modeling approaches to improve accuracy and detection limit is discussed. Detecting microbial contaminants in food using HSI can prevent outbreaks and recalls, and increase consumer acceptance and demand for shelf-stable food products.

Applications of multispectral and hyperspectral imaging in dermatology

Lt. Pushkar Aggarwal et al.

Summary: Multispectral/hyperspectral imaging plays an important role in dermatology diagnostics by providing novel information about skin lesions at the cellular level. Current research focuses on distinguishing melanoma from benign nevi for non-invasive diagnosis. Combining multispectral/hyperspectral imaging with smartphones is also being explored for creating portable and affordable devices.

Summary: Advanced imaging techniques, specifically hyperspectral imaging, can noninvasively characterize, monitor, and evaluate the impact of conservation treatments on cultural heritage objects. This paper examines the potential of hyperspectral imaging for the evaluation of heritage objects, using nondestructive scanning to identify materials and map their distribution on art pieces. By merging results with databases created using reference methods, original materials used by artists and past conservation interventions can be traced.

Intraoperative Guidance Using Hyperspectral Imaging: A Review for Surgeons

Manuel Barberio et al.

Summary: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a novel optical imaging modality that allows for contactless and non-destructive biochemical analysis of living tissue at a molecular level. It has diverse applications in the medical field and provides quantitative and qualitative information to objectively discriminate between different tissue types and between healthy and pathological tissue. Despite its potential, HSI is still not widely used in daily surgical practice, but has recently been utilized as an intraoperative guidance tool within different surgical disciplines.
