Wavelet-based operating deflection shapes for locating scour-related stiffness losses in multi-span bridges

Eugene J. OBrien et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method to detect multiple scour locations using wavelet-based analysis. By measuring the accelerations at each support point of a multi-span bridge, the method estimates the scour location through frequency-spatial domain transformation and introduces a damage indicator to differentiate healthy and scoured pier locations.

Collapse analysis of the multi-span reinforced concrete arch bridge of Caprigliola, Italy

Nicola Scattarreggia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential reasons behind the collapse of the 260 m-long reinforced concrete arch bridge in Caprigliola, Italy in April 2020. The numerical models developed showed good agreement between predicted and observed damage and debris distribution for one of the scenarios, suggesting it may be more plausible than others.

A data-driven approach for drive-by damage detection in bridges considering the influence of temperature change

Robert Corbally et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new data-driven approach for drive-by monitoring of bridge condition using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The ANN is trained to predict bridge behavior based on acceleration measurements from a passing vehicle. The response at the tire-pavement contact point is inferred and used as the primary input to the ANN, along with vehicle speed. The proposed algorithm demonstrates improved performance in detecting bridge cracking at different speeds, pavement conditions, and temperature variations compared to traditional methods, making it a suitable approach for long term bridge condition monitoring.

Re-deployable sensors for modal estimates of bridges and detection of damage-induced changes in boundary conditions

Muhammad Arslan Khan et al.

Summary: Mode shapes of bridges can be sensitive to changes in structure condition, and a novel structure health monitoring approach using re-deployable sensors and a series of measurements is proposed in this paper to estimate modal parameters and indicate bridge condition. The concept was successfully tested in a full-scale field trial on a railway bridge in the Republic of Ireland.

Bridge Damage and Repair Detection Using an Instrumented Train

E. Alexandra Micu et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of using repeated dynamic measurements taken on a passing train to assess the condition of a railway bridge. The results suggest that instrumented trains can be used for ongoing monitoring of bridge condition and identification of repair or rehabilitation needs. Insights into rare experimental evidence situations and challenges such as accurate positioning and variability in train speeds were also provided by this research.

A review of mobile sensing of bridges using moving vehicles: Progress to date, challenges and future trends

Abdollah Malekjafarian et al.

Summary: Sensors installed on moving vehicles have been extensively used for condition monitoring and structural assessment of bridges. These methods rely on measuring dynamic responses on passing vehicles to identify the bridge's dynamic characteristics and assess its structural condition. The critical advantage of these methods is the ability to monitor multiple bridges in a transport network at a relatively lower cost.

Summary: A new method for diagnosing the structural condition of bridge pile foundations based on the spatial correlation of high-density strain measurement points and an algorithm for estimating scour depth of pile foundations for long-span bridges have been proposed in this study. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified through numerical simulation and actual bridge data, showing promising results in accurately diagnosing the structural condition of pile foundations and estimating scour depth.
