3D characterization of the propagation of liquid metal embrittlement inner cracks during tensile shear testing of resistance spot welds

Outhmane Siar et al.

Summary: An X-ray tomography setup was developed to characterise liquid metal embrittlement (LME) cracks and internal defects in 3D in homogeneous advanced high strength steel resistance spot welds non destructively. The study found that the LME inner crack propagated stably through the sheet thickness near the weld nugget without altering the final fracture path, with all welds failing at the faying surface.

Liquid metal embrittlement transport mechanism in the Fe/Zn system: Stress-assisted diffusion

C. DiGiovanni et al.

Summary: The study determined the liquid metal embrittlement transport mechanism to be stress-assisted diffusion through experimental and numerical methods. Incremental observation of LME formation revealed the role of stress in LME onset. Stress created an additional diffusion flux that enhanced embrittler penetration, providing new insight into the thermomechanical state's significance for the onset of LME.

Formation mechanism of liquid metal embrittlement in laser lap welding of zinc-coated GEN3 steels

Yuanjing Zhu et al.

Summary: Liquid metal embrittlement (LME) was observed in laser lap welds of zinc-coated GEN3 steels, where liquid zinc reacted with the austenite matrix to create hard and brittle Fe-Zn phases resulting in crack initiation. Full penetration welding is recommended to reduce LME risk by allowing zinc vapor to escape from both the top and bottom of the keyhole.

Fracture modeling of resistance spot welded ultra-high-strength steel considering the effect of liquid metal embrittlement crack

Yunwu Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fracture initiation and propagation behavior of welds with different pre-crack characteristics. External pre-cracks accelerate damage accumulation, while internal pre-cracks have a more detrimental influence on weld performance. The negative effects of LME cracks on weld performance can be mitigated by controlling the crack location and geometry.

Occurrence of liquid-metal-embrittlement in a fully ferritic microstructure

Ali Ghatei-Kalashami et al.

Summary: This study found that fully ferritic structures are susceptible to liquid-metal-embrittlement (LME) phenomenon, contrary to previous beliefs that the presence of austenite is a prerequisite. Elemental distribution analysis showed that liquid Zn was not present, indicating that solid-state grain boundary diffusion may be involved in LME-cracking. The occurrence of grain dropout and Zn-containing cracks in grain boundaries without branching to other cracks suggested that grain boundary sensitization plays a role in LME-cracking.
