Helium partitioning to the core-shelled Ta nanoclusters in nanocrystalline Cu-Ta alloy

S. Srinivasan et al.

Summary: The study found that Ta nanoclusters can effectively trap helium, forming small bubbles and suppressing swelling. Irradiated Cu-Ta alloys at different temperatures showed bubbles mainly concentrated around Ta nanoclusters, with larger bubbles at high temperatures primarily associated with nanoclusters.

Toward tunable mechanical behavior and enhanced elastocaloric effect in NiTi alloy by gradient structure

Junyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a novel strategy to achieve highly tunable mechanical behavior and significantly enhanced elastocaloric effect in superelastic NiTi through the fabrication of a gradient structure using laser surface annealing. The gradient-structured NiTi exhibits tailorable martensitic transformation characteristics and shows improved elastocaloric cooling capacity and efficiency compared to traditional nanocrystalline and coarse-grained NiTi. The strong synergetic strengthening between fine and coarse grains in the gradient-structured NiTi contributes to these significant performance breakthroughs.

Deformation behavior and fracture mechanism of laminated Ti/Ti-50Nb composite fabricated by spark plasma sintering

Yanfei Yin et al.

Summary: The laminated Ti/Ti-50Nb composite, fabricated using spark plasma sintering, demonstrates a favorable combination of strength and ductility. The layered structure helps alleviate strain localization and maintains the total elongation of the composite equivalent to that of pure Ti. The tensile strength and stress-strain curves of the composite can be analyzed using the rule of mixture. Furthermore, microvoids initiate and grow at the interface, leading to the separation of the laminated structure into smaller units.

Microstructure tailoring and impact toughness of a newly developed high strength Ti-5Al-3Mo-3V-2Cr-2Zr-1Nb-1Fe alloy

Cong Wu et al.

Summary: Samples with different microstructures (BM, TM, LM) of a high strength Ti-5321 alloy were tested for impact performance, with results showing that LM had the highest impact toughness and crack initiation energy. SEM and EBSD analysis revealed the influence of microstructure on crack initiation and propagation during impact process, indicating that LM exhibited better impact properties due to its specific microstructure characteristics.

Toughening effects of Mo and Nb addition on impact toughness and crack resistance of titanium alloys

Shixing Huang et al.

Summary: The addition of beta stabilizers Mo and Nb significantly improved the impact toughness and crack resistance of titanium alloys. Ti-6Al-2Mo and Ti-6Al-3Nb alloys exhibited higher impact toughness and stronger resistance to crack propagation compared to Ti-6Al due to increased dislocation density and deformation twinning. This was attributed to the enhanced dislocation mobility and nucleation of deformation twinning in alpha/beta interfaces, leading to larger plastic deformation under impact loading.
