Determination of background values and assessment of pollution and ecological risk of heavy metals in urban agricultural soils of Yaounde, Cameroon

Amina Aboubakar et al.

Summary: The study aims to assess the concentrations and background values of heavy metals in urban agricultural soils in Yaounde, Cameroon. Results show that the soil is contaminated with lead and poses ecological risk, particularly at the Nkolondom site. Recommendations include developing long-term risk assessment strategies for potential migration of heavy metals in urban agricultural soils.

Ozone uptake at night is more damaging to plants than equivalent day-time flux

Eleni Goumenaki et al.

Summary: Plants exposed to equivalent ozone fluxes during the night showed greater biomass losses compared to those exposed during the day, attributed to depletion of cell wall-localised ascorbate at night. Depletion of ascorbic acid pools in leaves when exposed to darkness was observed, with apoplast ascorbic acid being more affected by light-dark transition than symplast. Furthermore, differences in ascorbic acid levels in leaves led to varying effects on CO2 assimilation rate.

Evaluation of green roof structures and substrates for Lactuca sativa L. in tropical conditions

Amanda Varela et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the best combination of urban green roof structures and substrates for growing lettuce in tropical climate conditions, finding that a monolithic multilayer structure and biochar-added substrate resulted in higher yield. It was also observed that the physicochemical and microbiological properties of substrates changed depending on climatic conditions.

Human Health Risk Assessment on the Consumption of Apples Growing in Urbanized Areas: Case of Kharkiv, Ukraine

Yuliia Medvedeva et al.

Summary: The study revealed that apple samples taken from different functional zones in Kharkiv, Ukraine had exceeded the maximum levels of heavy metals, especially in residential areas. This contamination could lead to immune, blood, urinoexcretory, nervous system, as well as liver and kidney disorders. Consuming these apples may pose higher carcinogenic risks.

Quality and Yield of Lettuce in an Open-Air Rooftop Hydroponic System

Maha Ezziddine et al.

Summary: The study found that lettuce grown in a rooftop hydroponic system showed higher nutrient uptake efficiency and higher nutrient content in the leaves compared to indoor hydroponic lettuce. While 25% of the lettuce heads exceeded the marketable weight, another 25% fell below the marketable weight.

Heavy metal contamination and health risk assessment in grains and grain-based processed food in Arequipa region of Peru

Yony Roman-Ochoa et al.

Summary: The study revealed elevated concentrations of heavy metals in grains and processed products in the Arequipa region of Peru, with some products exceeding standard limits. Processed rice and products showed adverse effects according to Total Hazard Index, while certain products had unacceptable cancer risks based on Total Target Cancer Risk analysis. The presence of significant pollution levels due to lead in processed products was also detected.
