Plastic After an Extreme Storm: The Typhoon-Induced Response of Micro- and Mesoplastics in Coastal Waters

Ryota Nakajima et al.

Summary: Extreme storms can transport a significant amount of plastic debris from land to sea, including microplastics and mesoplastics. After a typhoon, the concentrations of micro- and mesoplastics increase drastically, but return to pre-typhoon levels within a short period of time. Therefore, it is important to consider the impact of extreme storms on plastic debris leakage when estimating the annual load of plastics from land to sea.

Spatio-temporal variation of microplastic pollution in the sediment from the Chukchi Sea over five years

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the MP contamination in sediment from the Chukchi Sea over five years and found that the Chukchi Plateau is an accumulation zone for fibers related to fishing gear and textiles. The reduction of MP levels in sediment from the Chukchi Shelf may be related to factors such as bottom currents, sediment resuspension, and biomass. Additionally, the MP abundance in sediment from the Chukchi Sea correlated positively with the reduction of Arctic sea ice.

Microplastic ingestion in zooplankton from the Fram Strait in the Arctic

Zara L. R. Botterell et al.

Summary: Research has shown that Arctic zooplankton have ingested microplastics, with the smaller-sized microplastics being selected for by the zooplankton. The ingestion of high concentrations of microplastics could have negative effects on the growth, development, and fecundity of the zooplankton. As global plastic consumption increases and climate change reduces sea ice cover, the Arctic could be exposed to further plastic pollution, putting additional strain on this fragile ecosystem.

Plastic pollution in the Arctic

Melanie Bergmann et al.

Summary: Plastic debris and microplastics are widespread in the Arctic, even in areas without human activity. They come from various sources, both local and distant, and are transported to the Arctic by ocean currents, atmospheric transport, and rivers. Once in the Arctic, plastic pollution accumulates and affects local ecosystems.

Modeling the Accumulation and Transport of Microplastics by Sea Ice

A. S. Mountford et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is widespread in the marine environment, with emerging research on microplastic pollution in Antarctic sea ice. Sea ice serves as an important seasonal sink for microplastics, with positively buoyant microplastics dominating Arctic sea ice and neutrally buoyant plastics dominating Southern Ocean sea ice. Further observational data is needed to understand the transport and accumulation of microplastics in the Southern Ocean.

Global patterns for the spatial distribution of floating microfibers: Arctic Ocean as a potential accumulation zone

Andre R. A. Lima et al.

Summary: Most studies underestimate the amount of microfibers in the marine environment, highlighting the need for further research. The interaction among surface water temperature, salinity, currents and winds plays a crucial role in governing microfiber distribution patterns. Predictions show varying accumulation patterns of microfibers in different regions of the global ocean.

Importance of seasonal sea ice in the western Arctic ocean to the Arctic and global microplastic budgets

Seung-Kyu Kim et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the plastic particles trapped in Arctic sea ice are comparable to those in other Arctic basins, suggesting a strong linkage between the Western Arctic Ocean and the Arctic Central Basin. Additionally, it highlighted the role of the Western Arctic Ocean ice zone as a sink for global microplastics and a potential source for Arctic microplastics.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a significant issue in the 21st century, with recent research focusing on the transport of microplastics by the atmosphere. Studies suggest that atmospheric microplastics in the western United States primarily come from secondary reemission sources, highlighting the importance of understanding the sources and pathways of atmospheric plastic pollution.

Anthropogenic particles in sediment from an Arctic fjord

France Collard et al.

Summary: Research on plastic pollution in the Arctic is limited, with this study focusing on microplastics and other anthropogenic particles like dyed fibers in sediments from Kongsfjorden. Analysis revealed the presence of various APs, including microplastics, with different sizes and distribution patterns. This data provides insight into the presence of plastic and other APs in a remote fjord in Svalbard.
