Alien vs. predator: influence of environmental variability and predation on the survival of ascidian recruits of a native and alien species

Robin P. M. Gauff et al.

Summary: Drivers of successful introduction of exotic species remain a major focus of research in marine invasion biology. This study found that generalist fish predation may play a crucial role in the success of non-indigenous species through facilitation via competitive release.

The pace of modern life, revisited

Summary: Studies show that there is a relatively small difference in rates of change between human disturbed and natural populations, with harvesting having a greater impact on rates of change compared to other disturbances. Introduced populations show increased rates of change, while body size does not increase over time.

Characterization of the submarine disposal of a Bayer effluent (Gardanne alumina plant, southern France): I. Size distribution, chemical composition and settling rate of particles forming at the outfall

Stephanie Jacquet et al.

Summary: The submarine discharge of high pH clarified Bayer effluent from the Gardanne alumina plant in the Marseille region of France leads to the formation of concretions underwater, with major elements including Mg, Al, Ca, and S, as well as trace elements such as As and V. These elements are mainly associated with particles with diameters between 15.6 and 63 mm, representing 5-60% of the total concretion mass.

Assessing environmental pollution levels in marinas

Jose M. Guerra-Garcia et al.

Summary: Despite the increasing interest in recreational boating and the growing number of marinas worldwide, there is still a lack of environmental knowledge about these ecosystems. Detailed data on pollutants in marinas are crucial for a global approach to environmental risks and international management strategies. The study found significant differences among marinas in the Southern Iberian Peninsula, highlighting the importance of local management. Major factors affecting these differences include turbidity and the biocide Irgarol 1051 in seawater, as well as granulometry, hydrocarbons, and fecal coliforms in sediment.
