Impacts of Drought and Climatic Factors on Vegetation Dynamics in the Yellow River Basin and Yangtze River Basin, China

Weixia Jiang et al.

Summary: Understanding the impacts of drought and climate change on vegetation dynamics is crucial for vegetation management strategies and predicting future vegetation growth. This study analyzed the correlations between drought, climate factors, and vegetation conditions in the Yellow River Basin and Yangtze River Basin in China. The results showed that climate factors, particularly temperature, had a significant influence on vegetation growth, and the time-accumulation effect was more important than the time-lag effect.

Grassland Phenology Response to Climate Conditions in Biobio, Chile from 2001 to 2020

Marcelo-Alejandro Doussoulin-Guzman et al.

Summary: Plant phenology, influenced by climate conditions, is a sensitive indicator for predicting changes in ecosystems. By studying the evolution and changes in plant phenology and analyzing the correlations between vegetation indices (VIs) and climatic variables, this study found that climatic conditions in Biobio have become more conducive to grassland growth over the period of 2001-2020.

Legacy effects of spring phenology on vegetation growth under preseason meteorological drought in the Northern Hemisphere

Zhaoqi Zeng et al.

Summary: The study revealed a positive correlation between the start of spring phenology (SOS) and preseason meteorological drought (preseason drought), indicating a combined impact on spring and summer vegetation growth. The research also showed that preseason drought and advanced SOS had a coupled legacy effect on seasonal vegetation growth across biomes.

Responses of vegetation spring phenology to climatic factors in Xinjiang, China

Cheng Li et al.

Summary: The study found spatial heterogeneity in the average start date of the growing season for different vegetation types in Xinjiang, with an overall trend of earlier SOS. Temperature was found to be a significant factor influencing the SOS for different vegetation types, with warming spring temperatures leading to earlier SOS and increased precipitation causing delayed SOS.

Impacts of climate change and afforestation on vegetation dynamic in the Mu Us Desert, China

Zenghui Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between vegetation and climate change in the Mu Us Desert from 2000 to 2019, finding that NDVI during the growing season increased by 0.0058 per year. The results showed that precipitation, temperature, and relative humidity had a significant positive correlation with NDVI, while mean wind speed and sunshine hours had a significant negative correlation. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis indicated that climatic factors and afforestation contributed 41.9% and 58.1% to NDVI change, respectively, across the study area.

Impacts of global change on peak vegetation growth and its timing in terrestrial ecosystems of the continental US

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: Precipitation has the greatest impact on maximum vegetation growth, while temperature contributes the most to changes in peak of growing season. The effects of cloud cover vary depending on moisture regime, with more cloud cover delaying peak growth in wetter regions but advancing it in dry areas.

Atmospheric brightening counteracts warming-induced delays in autumn phenology of temperate trees in Europe

Zhaofei Wu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impacts of brightening and warming on autumn phenology in Central Europe from 1950 to 2016. The results showed that, despite a significant brightening and warming trend after the 1980s, there were only slight delays in leaf senescence, with brightening actually accelerating the leaf senescence dates. This highlights the need to consider radiation in models predicting autumn phenology.

Consistent Poplar Clone Ranking Based on Leaf Phenology and Temperature Along a Latitudinal and Climatic Gradient in Northern Europe

Giulia Vico et al.

Summary: The study found that climatic conditions and photoperiod affect the timing, speed, and length of the growing season of Populus clones, with latitude and clone variety also playing a role in the timing and speed of phenological stages. The growing degree day (GDD) model was not able to predict spring phenology, but it could be used to rank clones across different sites and years, providing insight into their relative performance.

Summary: The study found that on the Northeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 2000 to 2020, the start of the growing season (SOS) showed an advanced trend, mainly concentrated in the eastern part of the region, while there was a noticeable delay in high-altitude areas. Temperature, precipitation, and SOS exhibited a reverse fluctuation trend around the midpoint of 2010, with precipitation affecting the SOS earlier than temperature.

Summary: This study extensively investigates vegetation drought response in the CONUS area using remote sensing technology, and finds good consistencies between remote sensing products and meteorological data. Time lags significantly affect the correlation between SPEI and VCI, and there are variations in vegetation responses to meteorological indices among different vegetation types and aridity levels.

Widespread Mismatch Between Phenology and Climate in Human-Dominated Landscapes

Yiluan Song et al.

Summary: Through remote sensing observations, a systematic evaluation revealed a widespread mismatch between land surface phenology and climate in certain regions of the Northern Hemisphere over the past three decades. This mismatch was more pronounced in areas heavily impacted by human activities, suggesting a link between human activities and the desynchronization of phenology dynamics with climate variations.
