Quantification and spatially explicit driving forces of the incoordination between ecosystem service supply and social demand at a regional scale

Menghao Yang et al.

Summary: This study quantified the supply and social demand of ecosystem services (ESs) in China's Loess Plateau and explored their coordination relationships and underlying factors. The results showed spatio-temporal variations in ES supply and social demand, with improvement in coordination from 2000 to 2015. Vegetation cover driven by the Grain for Green Program was found to be highly correlated with coordination between ES supply and social demand. This study provides insights into the incoordination of ES supply and social demand and its spatial drivers, supporting decision-making for regional ecosystem management.

Coupling coordination analysis of ecosystem services and urban development of resource-based cities: A case study of Tangshan city

Shichao Zhu et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has had significant impacts on the ecological environment. This study aims to evaluate the coupling coordination degree between urban development systems and ecosystems, based on ecosystem service value. The results show that while the level of coupling coordination between urban development and ecosystems in Tangshan City is gradually improving, most areas have shifted from lagging urban development to lagging ecosystems, leading to an increasing contradiction between the two systems. Water supply, environment purification, and hydrological regulation are identified as the main factors influencing the coordinated development between urban development and ecosystems. These findings highlight the need for policymakers to continually monitor ecosystem service changes and formulate appropriate regulatory policies to ensure the provision of ecosystem services.

Ecological changes and the tradeoff and synergy of ecosystem services in western China

Linan Niu et al.

Summary: Since the implementation of the Development of Western Regions in 2000, there have been significant ecological changes in western China, with grassland decreasing and settlements and wetland ecosystems increasing. Water conservation and soil conservation services have shown fluctuating increases, while the windbreak and sand fixation service has declined. Ecosystem supply and water conservation, as well as soil conservation services, exhibit synergy, while ecosystem supply and windbreak and sand fixation service have tradeoffs. The synergy of ecosystem services is higher in areas subjected to ecological engineering policy.

Coupling and Coordination Relationships between Urban Expansion and Ecosystem Service Value in Kashgar City

Bumairiyemu Maimaiti et al.

Summary: The growing urbanization of oasis cities in Northwest China has a negative impact on the local ecological system. This study analyzes the coupling and coordination between urban expansion (UE) and ecosystem services value (ESv) in a typical oasis city (Kashgar) using satellite imagery. The results show that land use has significantly changed, with construction land and farmland experiencing the highest growth. The total ESv has decreased, indicating the adverse effects of urbanization on the local ecosystem. The study also identifies government policies and climatic factors as major driving forces of urban expansion.

Feng Tang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the habitat quality and urbanization level along the Grand Canal using different methods. It finds that the habitat quality has been declining, but improved in some areas after being designated as a world cultural heritage site. The urbanization level in terms of demographics, space, economy, and society has steadily increased along the Grand Canal. However, the social urbanization level lags behind the other dimensions. The study also reveals a fluctuating but increasing relationship between urbanization level and habitat quality.
