Seeking for a perfect (non-spherical) microplastic particle-The most comprehensive review on microplastic laboratory research

Ula Rozman et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the results of 715 laboratory studies published in the last five years on microplastics, finding that the majority of microplastic particles used are manufactured polystyrene spheres, with half of the studies failing to characterize the particles. Risk assessment of microplastic particles

Albert A. Koelmans et al.

Summary: This Review examines the properties of microplastic particles and discusses methods of assessing the risks they pose to humans and the environment. Microplastic particles are widespread in the environment and can be found in the air we breathe and the food we eat. The lack of a risk assessment framework that considers the multidimensionality of microplastic particles compared to natural particles is a key challenge. This article reviews current understanding of microplastic characteristics and effects and proposes a method for quantifying exposure and effect thresholds using probability density functions.

Individual and combined multigenerational effects induced by polystyrene nanoplastic and glyphosate in Daphnia magna (Strauss, 1820)

Diego Jose Nogueira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute and multigenerational effects of polystyrene nanoplastic (PSNP) and glyphosate (Gly) on the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna. The interactions between these compounds were mathematically predicted and evaluated using multiple toxicological endpoints. The results indicated that the combined individual toxicities of Gly and PSNP were increased when they were present as a mixture. The mixture also caused changes in mobility, ROS production, and reproduction parameters in Daphnia magna. These findings provide important information on the interaction of hydrophilic organic and nanoplastic pollutants in aqueous ecosystems.

Phenothiazine-based conjugated microporous polymers: Pore surface and bandgap engineering for visible light-driven aerobic oxidative cyanation

Sizhe Li et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic aerobic oxidative cyanation of tertiary amines using phenothiazine-containing conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) as heterogeneous visible light-active photocatalysts showed superior catalytic activity, extensive substrate adaptability, and outstanding recyclability. Fine molecular engineering with electron-donating and -withdrawing groups on the comonomer compositions allowed for tuning of the pore surface and band gap of CMPs, leading to enhanced photo-induced charge separation and interaction with substrates. The fluorine-substituted CMP-PTZ-3 demonstrated high efficiency, good stability, and regenerability as a pure organic photocatalyst, providing new insights in designing high-performance photocatalysts through molecular engineering strategy.
