Climate benefits from establishing marine protected areas targeted at blue carbon solutions

Emilia Jankowska et al.

Summary: Marine protected areas (MPAs) are effective tools for marine conservation and can play a significant role in mitigating climate change. By adopting six ocean-based solutions, such as coastal wetlands protection and seaweed farming, total emissions reduction by 2060 could reach 16.2 to 24.8 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO(2)-eq), contributing around 2% of the carbon mitigation needed to meet the Paris Agreement goals. Enhancing the blue carbon potential of MPAs could provide multiple benefits to the marine environment and human society.

Reactive nitrogen restructures and weakens microbial controls of soil N2O emissions

Christopher M. Jones et al.

Summary: Long-term fertilization field trials reveal that increased N2O production is associated with specific changes in soil microbial communities, providing insights into the relationship between reactive nitrogen and N2O emissions. The global surplus of reactive nitrogen in agricultural soils accelerates N2O emissions and impacts microbial controls, resulting in positive feedbacks. However, the link between legacy effects of reactive nitrogen on microbial communities and N2O emissions regulation is unclear. By studying soils from different experimental backgrounds, we demonstrate that increased N2O production is linked to specific phylogenetic shifts in frequently occurring soil microbes. The complexity of microbial co-association networks increased with N-r inputs, altering the importance of biotic and abiotic predictors of N2O emissions. Our findings highlight the connection between microbial legacy of N-r addition and increased N2O emissions, indicating that biological controls are weakened with higher soil resource levels.

Soil dissolved organic matters mediate bacterial taxa to enhance nitrification rates under wheat cultivation

Chang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of root exudates on soil dissolved organic matter (DOM), bacterial communities, and nitrogen transformation rates. The results showed that the presence of wheat significantly increased the composition of DOM in soil, particularly in nitrogen metabolism pathways. Wheat planting also led to changes in bacterial abundance and diversity, with soil DOM having a stronger influence on bacterial communities compared to soil available nutrients. It was found that N-transformation related bacteria were positively correlated with soil gross nitrification rate, indicating enhanced nitrogen transformation in both acidic and alkaline soils.

Biochar in climate change mitigation

Johannes Lehmann et al.

Summary: Climate change mitigation strategies based on biochar generation and its application to agricultural soils can effectively sequester carbon, with trade-offs between biogeochemical and economic considerations. Emission reductions and CO2 removal by biochar systems depend on the energy being replaced, with varying impacts when biochar is used instead of coal or renewable energy sources. Opportunities for increasing crop yields exist with biochar additions, but the trade-offs and relationships among emissions reductions, energy production, and fertilizer responses must be carefully considered for effective climate change mitigation.
