Trophic Magnification of Short-Chain Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in a Terrestrial Food Chain from the Tibetan Plateau

Kai Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and trophic transfer of short-chain PFASs in a terrestrial food chain and found that PFASs exhibit biomagnification in the food chain. The study also suggested that bird feathers can serve as indicators of PFAS exposure.

Ultraviolet filters in sunscreens and cosmetic products-A market survey

Chayada Chaiyabutr et al.

Summary: The study investigated the usage of UV filters in sunscreens and cosmetic products in the Thai market and found that titanium dioxide was the most commonly used UV filter. Understanding the availability and frequency of each UV filter provides valuable information on consumer exposure levels and helps in refining patch testing allergen series and monitoring adverse effects of UV filters.

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in soil and moss in Mt. Shergyla, southeast Tibetan Plateau: Occurrence, distribution and influencing factors

Hao Xian et al.

Summary: Research on the environmental fate and behavior of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in remote alpine regions is limited. This study investigated the concentrations and distributions of NBFRs in soils and mosses from the Tibetan Plateau, revealing that the concentrations of NBFRs correlated with altitude and were influenced by the mountain cold trapping effect (MCTE).

Effects of salinity on the chronic toxicity of 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) in the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus

Haizheng Hong et al.

Summary: The study revealed that environmentally relevant concentrations of 4-MBC have toxic effects on Tigriopus japonicus, with increasing salinity levels further enhancing its lethal, developmental, and reproductive toxicities. This may be attributed to the higher salinity levels increasing the uptake rate constant and bioconcentration factor of 4-MBC, exacerbating the oxidative stress induced by 4-MBC exposure in T. japonicus.

Uptake and translocation of UV-filters and synthetic musk compounds into edible parts of tomato grown in amended soils

Sara Ramos et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the potential plant uptake and translocation of emerging pollutants found in organic fertilizers made from sewage sludge. Most of the compounds were detected in tomato fruits, indicating a potential risk of uptake and translocation to fruits. While certain synthetic musk compounds pose a potential risk to the amended soils.

Fate and distribution of benzotriazole UV filters and stabilizers in environmental compartments from Gran Canaria Island (Spain): A comparison study

Sarah Montesdeoca-Esponda et al.

Summary: Tourism is a significant economic sector globally, but its impact on coastal areas, particularly in relation to personal care products such as UV filters and stabilizers, can lead to pollution issues. This study focused on assessing the presence and exposure of organic UV filters and stabilizers in Gran Canaria Island to draw conclusions for similar regions. The research highlighted the importance of understanding the distribution of these pollutants in different matrices for environmental managers in coastal areas reliant on tourism.

The presence of selected UV filters in a freshwater recreational reservoir and fate in controlled experiments

Elissa O'Malley et al.

Summary: UV filters from sunscreen and cosmetics are released into the environment during aquatic activities, with unclear environmental risks. Investigation in Enoggera Reservoir found 7 detected UV filters with varying concentrations throughout the day. Controlled experiments showed some UV filters had no significant changes over time, indicating dispersion may play a key role in their fate.

Pb tolerance and accumulation capabilities of Bidens pilosa L. growing in polluted soils depend on the history of exposure

Maria J. Salazar et al.

Summary: The study found that Bidens pilosa exhibited tolerance to Pb pollution in soil, with individuals from historically exposed populations showing better antioxidant responses and reduced cell membrane damage. However, the period of exposure was not long enough to produce a sufficient population for phytoextraction projects. While seeds from historically exposed populations may provide suitable individuals for Pb accumulation and translocation, they are not enough for large-scale phytoremediation projects. Individual accumulation profiles of B. pilosa are not related to physiological behavior or Pb uptake in roots, but rather to the incorporation of other heavy metals as micronutrients.

Biomagnification and trophic transfer of total mercury and methylmercury in a sub-tropical montane forest food web, southwest China

Chan Li et al.

Summary: This study revealed significant bioaccumulation and biomagnification of Hg, particularly MeHg, in a remote subtropical forest ecosystem in southwest China. The findings confirmed the production and efficient biomagnification of MeHg in the remote subtropical montane forest, as well as the significant bioaccumulation of MeHg in terrestrial top predators.

Mercury accumulation in leaves of different plant types - the significance of tissue age and specific leaf area

Hakan Pleijel et al.

Summary: The study found that mercury concentration in plant foliage increases with age, and atmospheric mercury uptake significantly influences mercury levels in plant leaves. Additionally, older foliage had higher mercury levels compared to younger foliage, highlighting the importance of understanding mercury biogeochemistry for assessing environmental impacts.
