Assessment of the effects of straw burning bans in China: Emissions, air quality, and health impacts

Ling Huang et al.

Summary: Open biomass burning significantly contributes to air pollution and climate change by releasing large amounts of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants. This study analyzed open crop straw burning emissions in China from 2010 to 2018, showing high emissions concentrations in Northeast, East, and North China. Spatial heterogeneities were observed in the trends of emissions, suggesting varying effectiveness of the straw burning bans in reducing emissions and improving health benefits.

Cost of economic growth: Air pollution and health expenditure

Fanglin Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined the causal effect of air pollution on health expenditure using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey in 2015. The results show that exposure to air pollution is associated with increased health expenditure, with PM2.5 being a main cause. Different populations have varying sensitivity levels to air pollution, and the mechanism through which air pollution affects health expenditure is through diseases occurrence and severity.

Air Pollution Health Risk Assessment (AP-HRA), Principles and Applications

Tavoos Hassan Bhat et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a significant public health issue, with health risk assessment playing a key role in promoting individual and global health as well as disease prevention. This paper provides an in-depth exploration of the concept and implementation of Air Pollution Health Risk Assessment (AP-HRA), as well as a comparative analysis of seven widely used AP-HRA tools.

Atmospheric formaldehyde, glyoxal and their relations to ozone pollution under low- and high-NOx regimes in summertime Shanghai, China

Yanlin Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mixing ratios of HCHO and CHOCHO in the urban area of Shanghai during summertime in 2018 using the active DOAS method, finding average levels of 3.31+/-1.43 ppbv and 0.164+/-0.073 ppbv, respectively. The research indicated that daytime photochemical processes are the dominant formation pathway for these trace gases, with the RGF ratio influenced by temperature and NO2 levels.
