Effect of Agricultural Organic Inputs on Nanoplastics Transport in Saturated Goethite-Coated Porous Media: Particle Size Selectivity and Role of Dissolved Organic Matter

Jie Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the co-transport of nanoplastics (NPs) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from agricultural organic inputs in porous media. The results show that the co-deposition of NPs with DOM occurs due to the formation of a complex, while DOM loaded on the porous media aids NP transport due to electrostatic repulsion. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that humic acid and cellulose play a significant role in NP retardation. The type of DOM also affects the transport and retardation of NPs.

Enhanced phosphorus mobility in a calcareous soil with organic amendments additions: Insights from a long term study with equal phosphorus input

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: The agricultural practice of replacing chemical fertilizers with organic amendments may have consequences for phosphorus loss to the environment. A ten-year field trial in calcareous soil showed that the addition of manure and/or straw significantly mobilized phosphorus in the soil profile and decreased the soil's maximum phosphorus sorption capacity.

Biochar affects the fate of phosphorus in soil and water: A critical review

Larissa Ghodszad et al.

Summary: Biochar is a promising material for managing phosphorus in the environment by affecting soil phosphorus cycling and removing phosphorus from water systems. However, the inconsistent effects of biochar on phosphorus fate in different studies are attributed to the variable properties of soil and biochar.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus-induced decrease in phosphorus loss due to leaching in red soils under simulated heavy rainfall

Yongmei He et al.

Summary: The inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi significantly enhanced the biomass and P uptake of maize, while also decreasing P concentrations in interflow and P losses from soils due to leaching under heavy rainfall conditions. Furthermore, there were no interaction effects between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and maize roots.

Enhanced topsoil P leaching in a short term flooded calcareous soil with combined straw and ammonium nitrogen incorporation

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: SI promotes the transformation of Ca-P to Fe/Al-P in soil while SN treatment significantly decreases topsoil Fe/Al-P content and increases P leaching. In contrast, SH treatment enhances Fe/Al-P accumulation and reduces P leaching, showing high P mobility in SN treatment and inhibition of P leaching in SH treatment due to Fe(III) reduction and acidification processes.

Phosphorus transport in different soil types and the contribution of control factors to phosphorus retardation

Jie Ma et al.

Summary: Iron minerals, organic matter, and pH play important roles in regulating phosphorus transport in soil. The research found that iron-rich laterite soil significantly slowed down phosphorus transport, while organic matter limited rapid release of phosphorus. Fe minerals were identified as essential for phosphorus immobilization.

Soil acidification enhances the mobilization of phosphorus under anoxic conditions in an agricultural soil: Investigating the potential for loss of phosphorus to water and the associated environmental risk

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that reducing conditions in highly acidic soil lead to increased dissolution of P due to Fe reduction and Mn dissolution. The decrease of Fe-P fraction and Ferrihydrite-Pads, as well as the correlation between dissolved P and Fe2+, support the conclusion of redox-induced P mobilization under anoxic conditions in highly acidic soils.

A meta-analysis of heavy metal bioavailability response to biochar aging: Importance of soil and biochar properties

Chengpeng Yuan et al.

Summary: A detailed analysis was conducted on the effects of biochar application in remediation of heavy metal-polluted soils, revealing that biochar aging can influence the changes in heavy metal bioavailability, with factors such as soil pH, texture, aging time, and pyrolysis temperature playing significant roles. Different impacts of biochar application and aging on heavy metal bioavailability were observed in various types of soils.

Hydrology and rainfall runoff pollutant removal performance of biochar-amended bioretention facilities based on field-scale experiments in lateritic red soil regions

Yepeng Mai et al.

Summary: This study examined the hydrologic performance and rainfall runoff pollutant removal capacity of field-scale biochar-amended bioretention facilities under different rainfall recurrence periods. Incorporating biochar into planting soil improved water content raising capacity, while increasing internal water storage zone height enhanced the water content raising capacity of the stone chip packing layer. Addition of biochar and higher internal water storage zone height effectively improved runoff volume control capacity.
