MgO-loaded nitrogen and phosphorus self-doped biochar: High-efficient adsorption of aquatic Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ and its remediation efficiency on heavy metal contaminated soil

Xin Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, MgO-loaded fish scale biochar (MgO-FB) was synthesized and used for the adsorption of aquatic Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ as well as the immobilization of heavy metals in soils. The results showed that MgO-FB had excellent adsorption capacities for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ and could maintain this capacity under various environmental disturbances. The enhanced adsorption capacity was attributed to the hydroxyapatite components and the MgO micro-nanoparticles on MgO-FB, as well as the coordination and complexation with different functional groups. MgO-FB also effectively reduced the contents of available Cu, Cd, and Pb in soils. In conclusion, MgO-FB has great potential for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated waters and soils.

A review of pristine and modified biochar immobilizing typical heavy metals in soil: Applications and challenges

Huabo Gong et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use of biochar for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soil has gained considerable global attention. This review summarizes the latest research on the immobilization of soil heavy metals using biochar in the past five years (until 2021). The methods, effects, and mechanisms of biochar and modified biochar in immobilizing typical heavy metals in soil are systematically presented. The reduction and precipitation of oxy-anionic heavy metals by biochar/modified biochar are the dominant mechanisms in reducing their toxicity. Pristine biochar can effectively immobilize cationic heavy metals. Commonly applied modification methods involve adding substances capable of precipitating heavy metals to the biochar. Additionally, the risks associated with biochar applications are assessed, such as leaching of certain heavy metals, biochar aging, and co-transportation of biochar nanoparticles with heavy metals. Future research should focus on the artificial/intelligent design of biochar for the remediation of multi-heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Mixed bacteria-loaded biochar for the immobilization of arsenic, lead, and cadmium in a polluted soil system: Effects and mechanisms

Xiaowen Ji et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that mixed bacteria-loaded biochar effectively immobilized As, Pb, and Cd in soil, increased soil pH and dehydrogenase activities. Pb was mainly immobilized by co-precipitation, while Cd was adsorbed through precipitation formation and ion exchange with the biochar. Synergistic reactions between anions and cations also contributed to the immobilization of heavy metals.

Qualitative and quantitative investigation on adsorption mechanisms of Cd (II) on modified biochar derived from co-pyrolysis of straw and sodium phytate

Dezheng Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the modification of biochars using sodium phytate and its effect on the adsorption of Cd(II) from solutions. It was found that the modified biochars had higher adsorption capacities compared to raw biochars. The modification method increased the content of dissolved organic matter and carbonate in the biochars, leading to enhanced adsorption mechanisms. The contribution of co-deposition with dissolved organic matter to adsorption was particularly significant at low pyrolysis temperatures.
