Yaoli Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of sulfonamide antibiotics on waste activated sludge fermentation and explored its microbiological mechanism. The presence of sulfadiazine significantly increased the production of short-chain fatty acids and promoted the release of soluble proteins and polysaccharides. Analysis of microbial community structure revealed increased abundance of fermenters in the presence of sulfonamide antibiotics and potential cooperative relationships among different fermenters.

Long-Term, Simultaneous Impact of Antimicrobials on the Efficiency of Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge and Changes in the Microbial Community

Malgorzata Czatzkowska et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of simultaneous, long-term exposure to three classes of antimicrobials on anaerobic digestion efficiency, microbial consortia, and fate of antibiotic resistance genes. The results showed that antibiotics decreased methane production and altered microbial composition. High-dose antibiotics led to significant changes in microbial biodiversity. The widespread use of antimicrobials may decrease anaerobic digestion efficiency and contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance.

Quinolone antibiotics in sewage treatment plants with activated sludge treatment processes: A review on source, concentration and removal

Mengyuan Zou et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the concentrations, migration and transformation, and influencing factors of quinolone antibiotics in sewage treatment plants (STPs) with activated sludge treatment processes. The main sources of quinolone antibiotics are animal breeding and slaughtering wastewater, pharmaceutical wastewater, and medical and domestic sewage. The differences in social and environmental factors, treatment processes, and operating parameters result in variations in the compounds and concentrations of quinolone antibiotics in influents and effluents globally. The migration and transformation of quinolone antibiotics are usually influenced by sludge adsorption, biodegradation, and photolysis. Source control, treatment process improvement, fate understanding and prediction, monitoring strategies, and risk assessment are potential options for improving the elimination and controlling the pollution of quinolone antibiotics in the future.

Senar Aydin et al.

Summary: The occurrences, temporal variations and ecotoxicological risks of 38 selected pharmaceuticals from 7 therapeutic classes have been observed in the anaerobically treated sludge of the urban wastewater treatment plant in Konya, Turkey. The total concentrations of all pharmaceutical compounds ranged from 280 to 4898 μg/kg of dry matter. The dominant therapeutic class was analgesics and anti-inflammatories, and the use of treated sludge as fertilizer in agricultural lands causes continuous contamination of the terrestrial environment by pharmaceuticals.

Review on fate and bioavailability of heavy metals during anaerobic digestion and composting of animal manure

Xiaochen Zheng et al.

Summary: This review systematically summarized the migration and transformation of heavy metals (HMs) during anaerobic digestion and composting. The results showed that organic matter degradation increased the HMs content in biogas residue and compost (with the exception of As in compost). Most of HMs in biogas residue and compost exceeded relevant standards. Cd and As mainly converted the bioavailable fractions into stable fractions during composting, but As (V) toxicity needs to be concerned.

Qiuguo Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, biomass has been widely used in agriculture due to its low cost and convenience. However, the increasing soil pollution of heavy metals poses threats to human health. Direct addition of biomass to soil can affect the bioavailability and content of heavy metals, with potential to both activate and immobilize heavy metals in the soil. Future research should focus on controlling heavy metal levels when using biomass in agriculture.

High-solid anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge: achievements and perspectives

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: High-solid anaerobic digestion (HS-AD) has been widely used for treating organic wastes, but its application to sewage sludge (SS) is limited due to stability and performance issues. Research has focused on improving methods like HS sludge pre-treatment and anaerobic co-digestion with other organic wastes. The presence of high substance concentrations inhibiting anaerobic microorganisms and causing poor mass transfer in HS-AD of SS has been identified as a key challenge. Future research should aim to standardize HS sludge definition, understand pollutant migration and transformation laws, describe specific substance degradation pathways, and establish accurate mathematical models. Additionally, green sludge dewatering agents and high value-added product development should be considered for future exploration.
