Ecological risk assessment of pesticides in urban streams of the Brazilian Amazon

Andreu Rico et al.

Summary: The use of pesticides has increased notably in households and peri-urban areas of the Amazon, but the presence of these contaminants and their ecological risks in freshwater ecosystems remain unexplored. This study assessed the exposure to pesticides in the Amazon River and urban streams, finding widespread pesticide contamination in urban and peri-urban areas of the Brazilian Amazon. Pesticide residues may pose risks to freshwater organisms, particularly invertebrates.

Development and validation of a solid-liquid extraction with low-temperature partitioning method for the determination of fipronil in turtle eggshell

Isabela S. Ambrosio et al.

Summary: The development and validation of a method for quantifying fipronil contamination in turtle eggshells is an urgent task. The proposed solid-liquid extraction with low-temperature partitioning method was optimized and successfully used to detect and quantify fipronil residues in amazon-turtle eggshell samples.

Genotoxic and melanic alterations in Lithobates catesbeianus (anura) tadpoles exposed to fipronil insecticide

Arleto T. Santos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the genotoxic and morphological systemic effects of fipronil on bullfrog tadpoles. The exposure to fipronil led to morphological changes in skin, liver, and blood biomarkers, including decreased darkness in heads and tails and reduced individual weight and liver mass. Genotoxic effects were observed even after short exposure times, with a correlation between abnormal nuclear cells and melanin levels. Fipronil has systemic effects on tadpoles based on its concentration and exposure time, potentially impacting their behavior and survival.

Summary: Brazil is the second largest exporter of agricultural products globally, with widespread use of pesticides in crops, posing threats to water resources and organisms. While most environmental concentrations are below allowed limits according to Brazilian legislation, they still pose a high risk to aquatic ecosystems.

Summary: The study found that the neonicotinoids had low acute toxicity to amphibians, while fipronil was highly toxic. Exposure to different concentrations did not show significant effects. The insecticides alone do not directly affect amphibians at concentrations likely to occur in paddy water.

Glyphosate concentrations in global freshwaters: are aquatic organisms at risk?

Emilia Marques Brovini et al.

Summary: The study found that the majority of countries worldwide do not have restrictive legislation for aquatic glyphosate concentrations, potentially posing risks to aquatic organisms. Glyphosate concentrations above 1 μg L-1 may present high risks to aquatic organisms.
