Submarine Groundwater Discharge on the Western Shelf of the Northern South China Sea Influenced by the Pearl River Plume and Upwelling

Guiyuan Dai et al.

Summary: The study found that submarine groundwater discharge is a significant nutrient and carbon source on the western shelf of the northern South China Sea, more important than upwelling and second only to the Pearl River. The results suggest that SGD plays a crucial role in the biogeochemical processes of the shelf and should be considered in future research and management efforts.

Seasonal dynamics of the carbonate system under complex circulation schemes on a large continental shelf: The northern South China Sea

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: Based on large-scale surveys conducted during all four seasons from 2009 to 2011, it was found that the carbonate systems on the northern South China Sea shelf exhibit significant variations in both seasonality and spatiality, with the inner-shelf being more dynamic compared to the mid-outer shelf. The influences of coastal upwelling, China Coastal Current, Pearl River Plume, and local river plume water were identified on the inner-shelf and their impacts on the carbonate system were different from those on the mid-outer shelf. The dynamics of DIC, pCO2, and Omega arag show distinct seasonal changes and interactions on both inner-shelf and mid-outer shelf in response to various forcing factors such as temperature and water mass mixing.

Destruction and reinstatement of coastal hypoxia in the South China Sea off the Pearl River estuary

Yangyang Zhao et al.

Summary: Intermittent hypoxia in the Pearl River estuary is influenced by factors such as typhoons and biochemical processes, leading to destruction and rapid restoration of hypoxic conditions. Freshwater inputs suppress hypoxia formation, and the reinstatement of hypoxia is influenced by offshore subsurface water intrusion. This study highlights the importance of understanding hypoxia intermittency in coastal areas under changing climate conditions.
