Incidence and Risk Factors for Blindness in Uveitis: A Nationwide Cohort Study from 2002 to 2013

Baek-Lok Oh et al.

Summary: The study investigated the incidence and risk factors of blindness in uveitis patients. It found that the incidence of unilateral and bilateral blindness was 2.93 and 0.42 per 1,000 person-years, with risk factors including age, low household income, and Behcet's disease. These findings can help in understanding and planning healthcare strategies for uveitis patients.

Summary: The incidence of Behcet's disease decreased significantly in the Republic of Korea from 2004 to 2017, especially among women and middle-aged individuals. However, the three-year survival rate of BD patients in the 2011-2017 period was slightly lower compared to the earlier periods.

Characteristics and phenotype heterogeneity in late-onset Behcet's syndrome: a cohort from a referral center in China

Jun Zou et al.

Summary: A study in a tertiary center in China identified demographic and clinical differences in late-onset Behcet's syndrome patients compared to early-onset patients. The study found higher prevalence of intestinal ulcers but lower prevalence of ocular involvement and folliculitis in late-onset patients. Female patients were more likely to have genital ulcers, erythema nodosum, and arthritis. Four phenotype clusters were identified, with gastrointestinal, panuveitis, and cardiovascular clusters being the most common among late-onset BS patients.

Epidemiology and treatment of Behcet's disease in the USA: insights from the Rheumatology Informatics System for Effectiveness (RISE) Registry with a comparison with other published cohorts from endemic regions

Nevin Hammam et al.

Summary: This study described the characteristics and medication use of BD patients in the U.S. using data from the RISE registry. The findings showed that BD patients in the U.S. are predominantly female and older compared to patients from endemic areas. Methotrexate and TNFi were commonly used in the U.S., while colchicine, cyclosporine, and cyclophosphamide were more common in Egypt, Turkey, and Iran. Further research is needed to explore the reasons for the higher prevalence of BD among women in the U.S.
