A regenerative Enhanced Geothermal System for heat and electricity production as well as energy storage

Muhammad Haris et al.

Summary: This study proposed an innovative concept of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) that integrates heat and electricity production with the storage of surplus renewable energy. Numerical simulations and coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) modeling were performed to investigate the evolution of fluid and heat transmissivity and optimize thermal production. The results showed a decrease in electric potential and the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), indicating the economic feasibility of the proposed EGS, and suggested several schemes for energy storage to extend the life of geothermal power plants.

Long-term performance simulation and sensitivity analysis of a large-scale seasonal borehole thermal energy storage system for industrial waste heat and solar energy

Fang Guo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term energy and exergy performance of a large-scale seasonal borehole thermal energy storage system in Chifeng, China, predicting a cyclic energy efficiency of 83.1% and an exergy efficiency of 40.7% over a 10-year simulation period. Sensitivity analysis revealed that total borehole length had the most significant influence on the system, followed by circulation flow rate and borehole spacing. Suggestions for system design optimization were provided based on the relationship between energy efficiency and exergy efficiency.

Energy, economic, and environmental analysis of integration of thermal energy storage into district heating systems using waste heat from data centres

Haoran Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the utilization of waste heat from data centres in district heating systems by introducing thermal energy storages. Results showed that a water tank can reduce peak loads by 31% and save annual energy costs by 5%, while a borehole thermal energy storage system can increase waste heat utilization rate to 96% and reduce annual CO2 emissions by 8%.

The thermal energy storage potential of underground tunnels used as heat exchangers

Alessandro F. Rotta Loria

Summary: This paper presents an unprecedented investigation of the thermal energy storage potential of underground tunnels used as heat exchangers, with a focus on seasonal, medium temperature thermal energy storage applications. The study defines fundamental physical variables for assessing the thermal energy storage potential of tunnels and numerically investigates the trend of these variables under different conditions, revealing storage efficiencies of energy tunnels of up to about 70%. Energy tunnels have marked potential to store massive amounts of thermal energy in the shallow subsurface for subsequent reuse, promising resilient and sustainable energy systems at urban scales.
