The nexus of renewable energy equity and agricultural commodities in the United States: Evidence of regime-switching and price bubbles

Andrew Adewale Alola

Summary: Amid increasing threat of food insecurity, the opportunity cost of producing efficient energy from renewable energy sources, especially from agricultural products, remains policymakers' nightmare; significant evidence of regime switching is found, with soybean and wheat having positive impacts on renewable energy equity while corn prices have negative impacts; weak evidence of explosive processes and collapse bubbles is observed in all examined commodities except for soybeans.

Fuel ethanol production from starchy grain and other crops: An overview on feedstocks, affecting factors, and technical advances

Jun Li et al.

Summary: This review provides a systematic overview of feedstocks, affecting factors, and technical advances in starch ethanol production. It discusses the influence of different starchy crops on ethanol yield and methods for improving ethanol production. The utilization of starch and fiber is also explored, along with recommendations for further improving starch ethanol production and valorizing ethanol.

Global food waste across the income spectrum: Implications for food prices, production and resource use

Emiliano Lopez Barrera et al.

Summary: This study addresses the quantitative linkages between food waste, food security, and environmental sustainability on a global scale. It develops a new panel database on household food waste at the national level and analyzes the non-linear relationship between per capita income and the share of food availability wasted. Future trajectories of household food waste show that emerging economies could play a key role in determining global food waste at mid-century, with implications for environmental and food security.

A lifecycle comparison of natural resource use and climate impact of biofuel and electric cars

Roger Sathre et al.

Summary: This study compares the climate impacts of passenger cars powered by different energy pathways, finding that electric vehicles have lower impacts than liquid-fueled internal combustion vehicles. Additionally, smaller cars have consistently lower climate impacts than larger cars. Accelerating the trend toward vehicle electrification and increasing renewable electricity generation is a wise strategy for climate-adapted passenger car transport.

Asymmetric effect of energy price on commodity price: New evidence from NARDL and time frequency wavelet approaches

Mohammad Ashraful Ferdous Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The study reveals an asymmetric relationship between world energy prices and world food prices, with positive changes in energy prices having a greater and longer-lasting impact on agricultural commodity prices. Additionally, wheat and corn prices lead energy prices in the long run, while rice prices lead oil and coal prices.

Effects of variable EU import levies on corn price volatility

Jurij Berger et al.

Summary: The variable import levy policy in the EU aims to protect domestic prices from international fluctuations, but has been associated with increased global market volatility. Empirical evidence on the policy's effects on price stability is lacking, with research showing that while it stabilizes prices in EU market, it increases volatility in markets like Argentina.

COVID-19 pandemic and economic policy uncertainty regimes affect commodity market volatility

Maruf Yakubu Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and economic policy uncertainty on commodity prices using a Markov regime-switching dynamic model. The findings suggest that most commodity prices adjust to historical prices in both low and high volatility regimes, while oil and natural gas are not sensitive to changes in COVID-19 deaths. The results are useful for investors and policymakers, highlighting the potential of precious metals like gold as a short-term hedge against market risks during a global pandemic.

On the Nonlinear Impact of Oil Price Shocks on the World Food Prices Under Different Markets Conditions

Manel Youssef et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of oil price shocks on global food prices by analyzing different structural oil shocks and using a novel research method. The results indicate that the reaction of food prices to various oil price shocks depends on the oil price regime, and contagion effects between oil and food markets exist during food and oil crisis periods.

COVID-19 and food prices in sub-Saharan Africa

Samuel Kwaku Agyei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on food prices in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly maize. Exchange rates, inflation, and crude oil prices also have detrimental effects on food prices during the pandemic. Therefore, governments should invest in infrastructure to improve food supply chain efficiency and support industries in the value chain to enhance food availability and price stability.
