Measuring Deformed Sea Ice in Seasonal Ice Zones Using L-Band SAR Images

Takenobu Toyota et al.

Summary: A method was developed and validated to detect dynamic deformation processes of sea ice in the southern Sea of Okhotsk, which classified sea ice into different types and effectively detected deformed ice using satellite L-band synthetic aperture radar. The study revealed that deformed ice regions appear in relatively linear alignments in the inner ice pack region, and PALSAR is more efficient in detecting deformed ice compared to RADARSAT-2.
